  • In all honesty…my parents. I play family tech support and it’s just easier with Apple. There aren’t a million different variants of hardware and manufacturer tweaks to the OS. If I also have an iPhone I can keep up with all the changes and help troubleshoot any issues (I live ~2000 miles away). If they have any immediate concerns they can visit an Apple Store and a ‘Genius’ can also walk them through whatever. They also have classes.

I keep my phones for 3 years and pass it on to one of my retired parents who keep it for another 3. Then it stops receiving the latest updates as its fallen out of support with Apple. They still work just fine but not receiving the latest major OS releases. My last phone swap lead to my parents passing their old phone on to my brother who couldn’t care less that it’s out of support and just wants a working device.

So those ~$1000 phones are getting some mileage…

  • It’s unlikely to be picked up by the Democrat-controlled Senate because of numerous amendments regarding abortion, diversity efforts, and transgender medical treatments.

That seems about right. Tired of bills having all this non related crap shoved into them.

Automatic registration would replace the coming-of-age tradition that all 18-year-old male U.S. citizens experience when they get a card in the mail from Uncle Sam informing them that they’re required under threat of criminal penalties to register for the Selective Service.

This ~2 decades ago for me but I have no recollection of this ever happening.

  • I’ve ripped a bunch of cds or otherwise acquired/bought a lot of flac files from various places. Stored on Plex and use PlexAmp headless on some raspberry pi’s with HifiBerry hats to connect to the receivers. I’ll use Spotify in the car or to find new music. My receivers both support Spotify Connect.

I know there’s better hardware out there (isn’t there always?) but this is what I use.

Living room which is mostly movies but music too is a 7.2.4 Atmos setup with Klipsch reference premiere series powered by a Marantz SR8015 and two 18” subs powered by a 1500w Crown amp each. This has a 6 disc cd player and Blu-ray player can do SACD.

Work from home office has a 7.2 (old living room stuff) Infinity Beta series speakers powered by a Yamaha RX-A3030. Two of the matching Infinity 12” with 500w amps in each. Yamaha has a very nice multichannel stereo mode to use all the speakers. This is hooked up to a Sony 300 CD changer as well.

    Headphones:

    Sennheiser HD650

    Hifiman HE560

    AKG Q701 (rewired)

    AKG K550 (rewired)

    Audeze EL-8

    Beyerdynamics DT880(600ohm)

    Various others.

I wanted to see what I liked and I kind of vary them all by music or amp. Rewired was swapping them to a mini 4-pin XLR so I can use them with my balanced amps.

    Headphone amps/dacs

    LH Labs Pulse, Pulse xfi

    Schiit Mjolnir (original)

    Little Dot MK IV SE,MK VII+, DAC_1

    JDS Labs Objective2 and ODAC

Think I’m missing a few others.

  • If online play is your jam then there is always https://cncnet.org/ It shows there are 493 people playing Yuri’s Revenge as I type this.

Not all the games are free to play. Some of them require you to copy some files from a paid version. So this sale is still relevant. Check out the FAQ at the url above.

My brother and I started playing Mental Omega instead. It’s a rewrite based off Yuri. It has new units, structures, abilities, and AI/balancing tweaks. http://mentalomega.com/

Unlike RA2 you can no longer just deploy 100 GI’s and mow down everything that comes at them. That never really made sense when a tank rolls by. In Mental Omega the tank will kill them all. Cause they’re just guys with rifles against a heavy armor tank…
