Rural areas tend to be less wait and faster results than urban areas.

This goes doubly so in red states that have blue cities.

Every election the Republicans get a huge headstart because the first to report are the most likely to vote R.

The cities take forever, because there’s a shit ton more votes to count.

Philadelphia County is the big one for me.

Biden was 81% of that vote, but Harris is only 78%. If Harris is losing vs Biden in the most important county and with a -4% statewide deficit and 78% counted it’s really not good.

I’m not sure where the votes can come from to get Harris PA. It’s still too close to call but vs 2020 everything is worse.

I actually think you’re wrong. Having MAGA family members, I tuink they are legitimately brainwashed. They are in a bubble where they don’t hear the bad about Trump. They only hear good things about him and ad things about his enemies. Some of what they hear is true, much of it is lies, all of it is intended to scare.

I think that, had these people heard the same things the rest of us did, at least some of them would be voting differently. Not all, but enough.

If my kid was a disabled queer like I am, they’d have a hard time telling me what they are thinking, and I have a hard time understanding direct statements.

If I had sex with someone of color, that kid is even more at risk. It’s not fair to give them a chance to be hated for something they can’t control, and never asked to be targeted for their skin.

It’s immoral to me, and I find people who had kids in the Post-Trump America morons who want more blood on the ground for corporations and water wars.

And if the fascists win and give the kids scars mentally and physically, they never asked for?

My parents had me and they expected a positive outcome. Then things got way worse without them seeing it happening. My life was set up to be good, they planned ahead. And then it was taken away from them.

Now they had to raise a kid in poverty, have another kid attend classes, as the mom snaps from the stress and abuses all of her family.

You can plan to stop fascism as much as you think you can give birth to the person who cures all cancers or solves world hunger. What you plan for isn’t guaranteed to happen. I expected Clinton to win against Trump. I expected Harris to win against Trump.

And now every child forced into birth from lack of abortion access has a horrid life to live. If they are anyone the Trump fascists hate, they will be bullied or maimed. You can’t lynch someone who’s never been born.

I couldn’t live with my kid being harmed. By myself, trying my best. Or someone acting in bad faith to hurt them. I don’t want to give someone who never asked to be born to ask “Why?”

I am in tears from the laughter on the tone deaf liberals even on this very post.

Harris didn’t lose “because of racism and sexism”. Like I genuinely don’t have the energy to explain it anymore at this point. Even if I did, liberals would close their eyes and pretend they didn’t see anything because they would rather plunge the world into darkness than let go of their stupid neoliberal ambitions.

Looks like reality has proven the liberals wrong, and the leftists correct yet again.

Just like I’ve been saying. Just like all leftists have been telling the Lemmy liberals all year.

I agree they need to actually try to court us leftists, but I don’t agree that this proved anyone wrong. In order to do that you’d need to show a solid path to victory if they did court the left, which I’m not sure exists yet. I would love for it to, but America is in a pretty messed up place right now.

They should have given people on the left some reason to be motivated to vote though, not just fear. They failed to do so continuously.

They should have given people on the left some reason to be motivated to vote though, not just fear.

This is the massive key that I really don’t think the Democratic party understands. When people are scared, they vote conservative. There are literal studies that show fear is the driving force behind conservative voters. Democrats need to make them feel safe. That’s one of the reasons Obama was so successful - he ran on change and hope. Fear works for Republicans. It doesn’t work for Democrats. But they see fear working for Republicans, so they copy it.

State polling showed they were really close in these ten swing states, so no surprise.

Our economy, our proxy wars that we are funding, and shifts in political views for some due to all these conflicts might have something to do with this.

Harris was not that popular in her presidential run in 2020 as well.

The data will be interesting when it is compared to 2016/2020/2024; I wonder if voter turnout increased or decreased!

Republica voter suppression was probably the tie breaker, but the fact that people keep saying he is better despite reality showing things were worse under Trump proves we have way too many idiots in this country.

All the states that added abortion rights to their constitution but put Trump and Republican congresspeople in are going to all pikachu face when they pass a national abortion ban.

The working class voted as expected; no need to talk down to people that don’t vote how you want them to.

I think it is better to continue to talk with people with diverse ideas different from ours and look at where we may agree.

That is why it is important to escape self-built echo chambers. Many independent journalists and commentators spoke about the increased support Trump was getting from minorities and the disdain people had for Kamala Harris.

I am looking forward to how third parties performed and to see if more people become anti-genocide or anti-war.

I think it was a matter of who was willing to go low. American people are not civilly minded, they appreciate hyperbole, satire, and vicious descriptive insults versus those they don’t like. This isn’t just Republicans who like these things, and one could even argue they don’t understand satire. Tim Walz was the energy we needed and the muzzle they put on him was like an enthusiasm sponge. When you say your enemies are good people who deserve a cabinet seat you’re fucking lost. Nobody in this climate gives a fuck about civility except the talking heads and politicians worried that making a stand needs to be proceeded by a ballot questionnaire and a sacrificial lamb.

He had no job in 2020 but still thinks he was doing better than in 2016, so his own employment either doesn’t matter to his well-being, or he’s detached from reality. I mean I think it’s the second. He didn’t used to be racist (10 years ago), but I’m pretty sure he quotes fbi crime statistics without context now. I’m not sure how you reach that. He used to be moderate or even left of american center, but now all the news that is not Tim Poole is fake. Oh and he was part of an ayn rand sex cult for a year there. He still believes her stuff despite having been kicked out by the leader. I don’t think he’s newly mobilized though so whoever was this go around may be different. I don’t know if it matters now. I feel like organizing may get some crack down in the near future. Best case is he’s so incompetent that he can’t implement the policies he said he will and people can vote freely in the future.

The fact that not one comment thus far has grappled with “we might just not be as popular as the republicans” is kind of telling.

We either write of slightly more than half the country or figure out a way to win them over.

(Admittedly, there’s a slim chance where we rack up very specific sets of votes but I haven’t seen anything to make that a reasonable bet.)

Because morality isn’t a fucking popularity contest. I don’t care if the Republicans are more popular when their platform and rhetoric is literally bigotry and hatred - full-blown Nazi shit. I’m not going to change my stance to a less moral position just because hate is trending.

Harris spent her whole campaign trying to win over Republicans! The campaign strategy was to take the Dem base for granted and focus solely on people who are swayed by the likes of Liz Cheney.

Don’t flatter yourself. If everyone who voted for a third party had voted for Harris instead, she still would have lost.

Leftists are too small a constituency to put Democrats over the top.

I don’t think the Democrats are less popular than the Republicans. It’s just they act like they’re going to win all the time so people don’t go vote.

The fact that not one comment thus far has grappled with “we might just not be as popular as the republicans” is kind of telling.

Because that wasn’t the question being asked. The question is why does a message of hate, bigotry, and oppression seem to resonate so strongly with such a large portion of the public? Where did the country go this wrong? In a sane sensible world Trump would never crack double digits of support, yet here we are with the very real possibility he might win. Once was a fluke, you could blame it on novelty factor or misguided protest votes like how brexit happened. If it happens again it’s a clear sign something is incredibly rotten in the heart of the US.

You’re deliberately misinterpreting the GOP message. It’s not one of hate, bigotry, or oppression.

Literally every ad for the GOP was about how the democrats are going to destroy the country by allowing in foreigners, supporting the LGBTQ community, and supporting women’s primary voting issues. Even when the ad was about a specific thing with none of that involved, at least one of those things would be mentioned.

We all know why, because they’ve created a machine to convert people.

Attacks on education and critical thinking, tied into religious fanaticism, and a diet of 24/7 propaganda through paper, tv, and digital media used to harness unhappiness with the status quo in an easy to digest answer “blame this scapegoat minority”.

Now, there’s one thing you might have noticed I don’t complain about: politicians. Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don’t fall out of the sky. They don’t pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It’s what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you’re going to get selfish, ignorant leaders. Term limits ain’t going to do any good; you’re just going to end up with a brand new bunch of selfish, ignorant Americans. So, maybe, maybe, maybe, it’s not the politicians who suck. Maybe something else sucks around here… like, the public. Yeah, the public sucks. There’s a nice campaign slogan for somebody: 'The Public Sucks. F*ck Hope.

There’s several things that are rotten.

The GOP I self has been spreading a message of fear, and nothing breeds hate like fear.

The Electoral College was created to ensure more populated free states couldn’t take away slavery, and this continues to be an issue.

First past the post voting is a broken system that doesn’t make people motivated to vote.

Most of all though I think is our media. They’re only goal is to make money. They don’t need to tell the truth or show anything they don’t want you to know. They need to keep your eyeballs glued to the screen and that’s it. Fox, in particular, has excelled at this, again by telling people about things they should be afraid of. If they’re the only place you can learn about “the coming dangers” you can’t afford to not watch. Also, for the other issues there’s obvious (though difficult) solutions. I don’t know what the solution for this is except not having privately controlled media, but that causes all kinds of other issues.

the rotten heart is the gop. they’ve been mastering propaganda since the 60s all while defunding public education to make it harder to see through. that’s why things are the way they are.

Did you ever consider that the American public might just be a bunch of spiteful, narcissistic, racist, misogynistic people?

Not “corrupted” by propaganda or a lack of education, but that you, collectively, made this choice - because you understand the consequences and what’s at stake, and you still made this choice?

Yes, that’s the problem. But how do you raise better people? Good education can give you better understanding of societal problems. Equality and tolerance can be taught, just like rasism and hate can be taught. A good education system can be the only way to cultivate people if the hate runs in the families. It takes several generations to make things better though.

Yeah, it’s not really a secret that things are bad (or at least not good) everywhere, but at least most other countries’ voting doesn’t really directly affect the whole world, in contrast to the American elections.

I dont know… looking at the map, the large cities are generally democrat majorities… you know, where the people with better jobs, hence an education, live.

Voting Trump just shows a very clear lack of critical thinking.

This makes me wonder tho. In movies, the US president is often portrait as whoever is president. During the clinton and bush years, the president was a white haired older guy. Later it was sometimes portrait as either a black person or just obama himself. Before all that it was often just basically nixon. But there was never the fat idiot. Now the fat idiot is gonna be president for 8 years, is hollywood just gonna ignore that or is anyone having the balls to portray the president as a incompetent grossly overweight idiot?
