I’ve been here and on Kbin since the Great Reddit Migration of '23. However it seems Kbin has gone the way of the dodo for now. So I’m looking for something similar, any suggestions?
Ummm… Lemmy…?
I mean, you’re literally already on it.
There are instances that have defederated from Lemmy that
arewere on Kbin. I like to keep an open mind and seek more points of view.I’m not leaving here, just broadening horizons.
There’s many instances that are fairly well federated: https://github.com/maltfield/awesome-lemmy-instances?tab=readme-ov-file
In the list, look at the number in the BB (blocked by) and BI (blockIng) columns.
You are allowed to make accounts on other instances, you know
Ah, if you just want something other than the lemmy.world instance, but are okay with lemmy-the-server-software, you can get a list of other lemmy instances here:
https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/list
And since I mentioned the other instance types above, for mbin:
https://mbin.fediverse.observer/list
Kbin:
https://kbin.fediverse.observer/list
Piefed:
https://piefed.fediverse.observer/list
A couple of recommendations, if you want another instance. I don’t know what “broadening horizons” here deals with.
You can see what instances a given lemmy instance has defederated with at
/instances
. So for lemmy.world:I can’t link there directly, unfortunately, but click on “Blocked Instances” and you’ll see a list.

My own view is that lemmy.world is a pretty decent general-purpose instance.

I use lemmy.today because they specifically have, as a policy, that they try not to defederate with other instances (which it sounds like is something that you care about), that they want to let the users choose want content to see. It’s on the West Coast, US, which may-or-may-not be near you. So if you’re on there, you can browse anything…but it doesn’t have a huge userbase, at least not yet, and an instance needs to have users that subscribe to new content before it shows up in an all feed. So you may want to hit https://lemmyverse.net/communities to find new communities to subscribe to, rather than just sitting in the “All” feed (which I don’t personally think is a great way to find new communities anyway, but…)
-
beehaw.org is generally more restrictive than most instances, so it probably isn’t what you were after, but it defederated from lemmy.world some time back, so if you’re after their content, you might want an account there or an account on an instance that it has not defederated from. I’m not really enthusiastic about their moderation policy, but they do consistently have solid discussion, IMHO.

lemmy.dbzer0.com is run by the ex- /r/piracy lead moderator on Reddit, and is aimed at piracy. Lemmy.world has not defederated, though I can imagine that some instances might, so if that’s what you’re after…
There are various special-purpose instances, like https://pawb.social/ for furries or https://mander.xyz/ for science, but I don’t think that these are likely to have most general-purpose instances defederate from them. So you probably don’t need another account off lemmy.world if those are what you’re after and you’re wanting more content than is accessible from lemmy.world.
Looking at lemmy.world’s defederation list, from a quick skim, the stuff there tends to fall into a few categories:
-
Far-right stuff that doesn’t get along with others, like https://skinheads.social/
-
Far-left stuff that doesn’t get along with others, like https://hexbear.net/ or https://lemmygrad.ml/
-
Underage anime porn, which is illegal in some locales, like https://burggit.moe/ or https://headpat.cafe/ (pleroma, not lemmy). Burggit.moe, as I recall, also deals with consentual-nonconsentual content.
So if you’re looking for anything there, you can probably just grab one of said instances and get an account there, as I doubt that they’d defederate from other instances that deal with similar content (though I dunno, not familiar with any drama there…lot of fractious far-left groups in the world who don’t like other far-left groups).
I also visit https://lemmyverse.net/communities just for a broader view, fairly often.
Yeah, same (and just updated comment to mention it). I kind of wish that there was a better way to direct people there or to some sort of interface that’s functionally-equivalent, because it really isn’t obvious that it’s there to new users, and it really is important to find new communities, at least as things stand.
Oh, and sometimes, if you think that someone’s an interesting poster, it might be worth looking at their posting history to see if they hang out other places that you might want to also frequent.
I do that! I also “follow” people who have interesting post histories, and also sort by “newest.” Your post was in depth and therefore amazing, so I thank you and am appreciate.

I started on lemmy.one, but when they had stability problems, I fired up kbin.
Kbin turned me off because I could only use their app, and I found I liked Boost.
So I set up a lemmy.world account and here I am!
well hi there!
I’m on fedia.io and I’ve been enjoying it. I left kbin after they had major spam problems a couple months ago, and my volunteer mod application was ignored.
same
Can confirm, Fedia is great if you like Kbin but also want it to be online.
I do like both of those things.
What happened to Kbin?
I’ve been on it like twice but never really got into it.
It’s been down for a while, and my (poor and not entirely informed) understand is that the Admin is on hiatus for an unknown amount of time
That is my understanding, and the instability when the dev was first absent for long periods is why I moved to a new instance.
I moved to mbin too, as Ernest was obviously unable to commit the time and resources needed while he has been dealing with life and health related issues. The real bummer is the complete lack of willingness to accept or recognize help when it’s required so the least I could do I stop using it and remove my usage from the servers he wouldn’t be able to maintain. It’s sad but the fediverse is functioning as intended here, being able to move around is a core feature. I hope he recovers well.
That’s pretty much it , and where I started. I went onto sh.itjust.works, but the latency between my device and their server got so bad, I’ve not been there in a few weeks. Currently on kbin earth.
On that note, I don’t know if there’s any website that will have your browser request the root page on various sites and return one with a low average time – probably one out there somewhere.
Fediverse.observer does show the country that one is located in.
If you’re on a Linux system, there’s a utility which is designed to check ping time to a list of servers and find the one with the shortest average network latency called
netselect
. That isn’t necessarily the one that will serve up pages the quickest, if it’s overloaded. That’s pretty awesome, thanks for that. I’m almost done with a project and plan to dl and install Linux in the next few months, hopefully.
I think it was originally intended to be a relatively-small project by the creator, who did not expect to have the thing grow quite as much as it did and seemed to have some conflicting time issues.
There’s a community fork of Kbin called Mbin. See https://joinmbin.org
man, thanks for this, i’ve been looking for an android app for mbin, for it feels like forever, and right there on that site, it’s just sitting there, Interstellar for Android, beauty, works great. party on excellent.
Looks like it also works on lemmy servers.
checks F-Droid
But it looks like nobody has packaged it for F-Droid yet. :-/
Use Obtainium!
Dave’s suggestion is the best if what you want is something like kbin, because it is, well, kbin but with work continuing on it.
A popular example mbin server, if you want to take a look:
If you’re just looking for a compatible-with-lemmy-but-not-lemmy server, and not specifically in search for something like kbin:
If what you’re okay with lemmy, but don’t like the lemmy Web UI, then there are some alternative frontends. My own home instance runs several, which you can take a look at. A number of other lemmy instances also do so:
Photon (looks like it’s not working on my home instance ATM, so here’s lemmy.world’s):
Voyager:

Alexandrite:
Thank you for the detailed explanation. It’s one of the things I have really come to love about most of the Fediverse.
Damn homeboy pulled out the encyclopedia.
seconding this. despite the url, the instance i am on runs mbin and it’s the bees knees
kbin.run although the missing instance blocking is really starting to get on my tits.
kbin.run (which runs mbin) :)
Another for the mbin team at kbin.run
Forked from kbin and being worked on by a team
Thank you all for the suggestions, I appreciate your time.
Similar in what way?
https://lemmy.ee is like everything but the worst spammers
https://hexbear.net is… a weird mix I don’t know how to label… real in a way, I guess. They come across as more reddit like IMO.
https://lemmy.world is my personal favorite because of the a. and p. prefix variants that are available without using any extra apps or whatnot.
https://lemmy.ml is the original with the devs running it and has the most active communities in general, but no porn.
https://lemmynsfw.com is a fantastic crew of peeps if you want an eye FULL and the rest of Lemmy too.
https://lemmy.dbzer0.com division by zero has the pirate feeds info which is blocked by .world.
https://sh.itjust.works is quite active and seems to have collected a younger but still mixed group
Just to name a few.
I’m on mbin (kbin.run)
fork of kbin but with more than one person working on ot
