I like ballotpedia.org but am very open to other resources or suggestions for how to get good info. Honestly half the reason I’m posting this is to start a solid thread of resources.
Whatever other affiliations or beliefs you have, I’m pretty sure we can all agree that we’re not getting them out by starting at a national level. We need to get people back into talking about politics that don’t involve Trump or Biden and people suck and are also just very depressed right now so we need to make it easy.
So today’s social health challenge is to find a local candidate to start namedropping online or in person at least once or twice a week for the next six months. Encourage others to do the same. Get people talking about literally anyone third party. I don’t even care if they’re even actually a good candidate or whatever just stop letting them make the conversation about Trump and Biden!
I voted third party for 30 years straight. That all ended with Trump. If he wins, democracy is dead in the USA. There’s no coming back from that. I was never a “lesser of two evils” guy, but faced with the option of living in a fascist dictatorship, you’d better believe I am now.
I said local. I would encourage you to vote democratic at the state and national level but that’s not what this is about. Everyone pretty much already knows who they’re voting for in that part of the election. It’s the mayors and school board people we need to flip now too though if we ever want to get out of this. A pause button only helps you if you do something with the time you bought. The fact that you still had to make this conversation about the national race IS the psyop.
Yes for local elections you need to investigate all the options and see which one is best. It usually doesn’t divide cleanly upon party lines and not all 3rd party candidates are great. Wouldn’t be something where you could have Lemmy sharing their favorites for all voting districts though, there are too many.
It’s a bit late in the game to drum up support for third party candidates. Republicans have been playing the long game and pushing local elections hard right for years, decades even. You can’t jump in a few months before elections and expect to make any difference other than ensuring the Republican base wins again.
Ranked choice is the only solution.
Not a shower thought.
I’d much rather spend my energy doing something useful like talking to them about the importance of pushing for ranked choice voting.
Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) or literally any other preference voting system has mathematically and demonstrably better outcomes than the First Past the Post system most of the US uses today.
If We the People want to keep having a democratic republic that even remotely represents us, we need to keep fighting for better access to voting rights, fair districting, and improved voting systems like RCV.

Cool, but people can do this right now on the toilet while shitting. They can start working on that other stuff when they actually have time. Baby steps here. Also you need third parties running things before you can get that done anyway because democrats won’t do that for the exact same reason they’ll never actually get rid of the Republicans.
Why would I be able to talk to other locals about a third option from my toilet but not about ranked voting from my toilet?

You’re straight up wrong.
We need to get people back into talking about politics that don’t involve Trump or Biden
We need to stop assuming everyone on the internet is from USA
