Of course, anyone who has been watching Hamas for the last decade knows that they routinely lie about civilian casualties while simultaneously using them as meat shields.

This is the UN, not Hamas.

The article suggests that the change is due to using figures from the Gaza Health Ministry - which is still part of the Hamas-run government - rather than Hamas’ Media Office, which is also Hamas.

It’s a bit rich to suggest that the IDF killing 5000 women and 8000 children is the result of Hamas, rather than the IDF.

Lying about casualties is standard propaganda in every conflict. Everybody does it (for another comparison, look at the discrepancy between Ukraine and Russia’s published numbers). That’s why third party assessments are important.

It’s been hard to get people into Gaza safely to do accurate analysis however.

    God this reads extremely pro-Israel.

“Hey everyone, Hamas lied about 70% of casualties being women and children. The actual number is 50%, so that makes Israel the good guys!”

Fuck no, it doesn’t matter what the ratio is, the fact is that noncombatants are being slaughtered by the thousands.

Did the UN go into the Gaza strip to count the victims while israel invaded Rafah? Why did the number magically change? Where does the new number come from, the IDF themselves?

The timing of this makes no sense whatsoever.

Wait so their original argument argument is “you lied! we only killed 7,797 children so far”, as if that is an acceptable number?

“The UN’s method of reporting deaths in Gaza is the complete opposite of what they do in other conflict situations,” Neuer said, pointing to the UN’s recent efforts in Ukraine where it has established “a defined methodology using individual records of civilian harm, where a standard of proof was met, namely, reasonable grounds to believe that the harm took place.”

Ok, you may let UN workers go to Gaza and look for the corpses from among the rubble. Can you guarantee that Israel won’t murder them, the same way they’ve murdered humanitarian help workers?

While more than 9,500 women and 14,500 children were reported among the fatalities by the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on May 6, two days later that number was revised significantly downward. Today, under 5,000 women and 8,000 children are now officially listed by the UN as casualties.

…So it’s the same order of magnitude. Is this supposed to change the moral of the story?

    https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/un-says-gaza-death-toll-still-over-35000-not-all-bodies-identified-2024-05-13

U.N. spokesperson Farhan Haq said the ministry’s figures - cited regularly by the U.N. its reporting on the seven-month-long conflict - now reflected a breakdown of the 24,686 deaths of “people who have been fully identified.” “There’s about another 10,000 plus bodies who still have to be fully identified, and so then the details of those - which of those are children, which of those are women - that will be re-established once the full identification process is complete,” Haq told reporters in New York./

Hey we’re updating the numbers with what we’ve found and still have more to do

So 10.000 Palestinians got completely bombed into unrecognizable bodies

Zionist propaganda spins this into “they didn’t die”.

      Epic.

These are the identified casualties, not the total casualties. We’re not going to know the full extent of how much people has died until anyone tries to make a census of all remaining Gazans.

Yep, note that the number of deaths officially has been stuck at 32000 for months now. It’s not that Israel stopped bombing, it’s because they destroyed all the hospitals where the counting for official numbers is done. The actual death toll is probably already way past 100000.
