The ability for communities across different instances behave like one. We don’t need ten different communities doing the exact same thing.

We don’t need to be as big as Facebook but three or four times more users would probably be ideal.

Ooo, I like this. But there would need to be checks to make sure it isn’t abused. You wouldn’t want some troll community saying it’s associated with gaming, or any similar scenario.

Are there any topics that are majorly split? I’m pretty sure just like on reddit when two subs had similar names one eventually gets bigger and dominates. I don’t see how it’s going to be much different here.

Yea I wonder about this too.

Major problem is that fracturing is in the nature of decentralised federation. So my thinking is that what’s needed is some additional features that enable users to easily stitch together multiple communities in ways that are easily sharable or “upload-able”.

      Personalised multi-communities + (better) cross-post surfacing + cross-post comment folding …

… could go fair I suspect. If multi-communities like this could then be easily configured, you could then have downloadable setups (ie config files or something similar) recommended by users or alliances of communities for new users to easily get started.

Interestingly, I’d wonder if such a feature set were to exist and gain widespread traction, whether it would enable easier community migrations when things go south in a community.

I wish a lot of the niche communities on Reddit would just migrate already. We are so close, but a few refuse thus far. Otherwise, tech and apps are all there!

This is the ticket right here. Slowly but surely these communities are growing (hopefully)

Back when Reddit was still “new” people posted niche content into a few broad categories until there was enough of that content to start its own category.

I wish people used Lemmy like that.

  • More individual game communities with active participants. Even massively popular games don’t have much activity here, leaving the options for discussion that’s limited to a specific game either Reddit or Steam Forums.

    Both are fucking horrible.

I used to be into dark, offensive jokes until like Dave Chapelle I realized that many of the people weren’t laughing at the ridiculous nature of the jokes but because they supported the offense against group X or Y. I felt gross to be part of that, so I mostly left offensive humor behind online. Now I stick to close-knit groups where everyone has a social awareness and understanding of what is over the line and we’ll call one another out when necessary.

That said, it is something I enjoy, it’s just very hard to do well. I leave it up to Bill Burr and other comedians of that sort who can handle the nuance.

I could just be old too, happens to the best of us.

I haven’t thought of that point of view.

Yea, I didn’t realize it myself, someone pointed it out to me. That doesn’t mean anything is wrong with dark humor, I also like it, it’s just trickier than I realized. That’s what friends are for, we share perspectives.

Thinking back on it, the first time someone shared this to me I was pretty dismissive of the idea. It took me a while to process it and come around. Unfortunately I never got to tell the person they changed my perspective because they were gone before I had the realization.

Lately I’ve been trying to leave comments when there are few or none. I try to leave the kind I liked seeing on Reddit. I prefer to lurk, but I guess commenting is okay, too.

More content, more comments. The news feed is a little slow, especially for some communities. For example, if you go to specific game communities, there may only be a post or two a day, where Reddit has a dozen an hour. It leads to less conversations.

A little more appreciation for nuance, empathy, and chill when it comes to “hot” topics would be appreciated.

Like just about every day I check Lemmy, and I find some really awful, yet highly-voted take (usually on politics, sometimes on tech or something) that sends my eyes rolling so hard I could probably hook them up to a generator and get carbon-free power.

I can deal with downtimes, community drama, and needing to grow conversations. But the hostility I see almost daily turns visiting Lemmy into a stressful, not welcoming experience.

I wish Lemmy had more tools in place to prevent mod abuse. Did you know that moderators can list on the public mod log ANY reason they want, whether true or not? Just so no one gets confused, I understand you can be banned for any reason from a community. I’m referring to the listed reason that is public.

Bizarre sub communities with rich veins of content. I want to see pictures of amateur electric sign makers, marbel olympics, and graffiti.
