If they had no special reason to trust you, then they don’t need to risk the consequence of you not being able to keep a secret. If it’s a slow day and there’s time to deal with potential consequences as they come, then probably a person could do more small favours.

No. They made the policy for a reason, and just don’t think you’re any more exceptional than anyone else.

Respecting others privacy isn’t a judgement against you. If it doesn’t involve you, it’s not your business, your own curiosity will have to go unsatisfied. That’s how you respect others’ privacy too, by staying out of it. If you need to know, you’ll know. And by asking someone to betray a secret puts them in an awkward place. Trying to learn others’ secrets is just all around rude. Be trustworthy, not a sneaky gossip.

If the post title was about apples your comment would be about corned beef. The post has nothing to do with “Respecting others privacy”

Also, the community page where this was posted is ShowerThoughts. It wasn’t posted in UnpopularOpinion or Vent or AskLemmy.

ShowerThoughts are supposed to be humorous in nature and not to be taken so seriously that they require pragmatic critique.

Yeah, because 95% of the time people who think they’re special and want exceptions are awful at keeping secrets

“So… What you’re saying is that you instituted a blanket policy across the board without feedback and without an exception process.”

Some people really think rules exist for a reason and don’t subscribe to the “it’s only illegal if don’t get thought” mentality.

I think it’s more about cost-benefit analysis than any commentary about your integrity.

Benefit to them if they make an exception for you: Probably very small if any. Potential harm to them if they make an exception for you: You tell everyone and they get harassed constantly.

Benefit to them if they don’t make an exception for you: They don’t have to make an exception, which is probably less work for them. Potential harm to them if they don’t make an exception for you: You get upset and don’t engage with them anymore, and they don’t have to put up with you asking for exceptions, I guess?

The line is really just a nice way of saying, “Your business is not worth the potential headache that putting up with your BS would cause.”
