Looking for something like Hacker News but not about tech or programming.
Looking for something where people post or comment about Science, Physics, philosophical things, Simulation Theory, the Multiverse, or crazy “what if” hypotheticals.
Looking for the format of Reddit or Lemmy but with out all the negative comments and downvoting.
Are there any sites like that?
I just block communities that are mostly memes, seems to work somewhat well
There are lemmy instances that don’t allow down voting and are much more strict about being polite. Behaw I think comes to mind, but I think there are others too.
Reddthat disabled downvotes too
*Beehaw. Two Es. 🐝
lemmy.blahaj.zone is a LGBT-friendly instance that doesn’t allow downvoting.
Maybe not an alternative site, but an alternative perspective. Instead of looking at all items on lemmy, try finding and subscribing to communities that pique your interest, then viewing by subscribed communities.
I know it’s not what you were specifically asking for, and it’s a little more work than just sliding into another site, but it will give you the opportunity to weed out information you are not interested in.
Some communities on here are pretty close
The mander.xyz communities for example
Only somewhat populated one I can think of off the top of my head would be using Lemmy from a dedicated Instance like mander or maybe that solarpunk one, and sticking to the local feed.
But memes are tough to escape. The internet almost runs on memes, they’re a horrendously efficient form of communication.
Try to make your own community? You could at least set rules about content. If it actually took off I think people would be interested, but it’s probably going to attract more people who want to lurk rather than contribute.
Yeah Tildes is exactly what OP is looking for. It was designed from the start to facilitate discussions and suppress memes
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned https://beehaw.org/ WRT no down votes.
As for memes, I don’t tend to see many memes on lemmy … I’m also not really into them. They seem mostly oriented around meme communities so assuming you’re on “subscribed” and not “all” of “local” view you really shouldn’t be seeing much (?)
Tildes fits that description. The posts are text-only or links to websites. No memes.
I use that site in addition to Lemmy, not as a replacement but a supplement. It’s just a different flavor of discussion.
It’s invite-only but I can give you an invitation code if you’re interested. Take a look, see if you like it, and send me a private message if you want an invitation.
This. https://lobste.rs/
in addition to Tildes which others have mentioned you might like the Metafilter community over at https://www.metafilter.com/
You mean you don’t like trying to talk to someone to have them follow up with childish pictures and silly jokes that are typically not even funny?
That’s what she said.
Nice.
wdym? noone does that
:p
That’s like, right up in there
Try physicsforums maybe. I don’t hang out there though, too iamverysmart. Same with lesswrong except even more. It seems to me that Lemmy, Reddit, and HN aren’t really set up for that kind of discussion.
It’s still lemmy, but the mander.xyz instance is exactly this for science
Speaking of that, there was a hacker news feed here on lemmy, but it stopped, anyone know what happened and how to get it back?
Not the answer you are looking for, but I use Harmonic to browse Hacker News on Android, in case the posts don’t resume.
Ah so it isn’t just me
