What is the complete correct response for users to carry out if they spot CP?

Is just the report button on the post good enough? Is there some kind of higher level report for bigger-than-just-one-instance shit that threatens Lemmy as a whole? Should we call the FBI or some shit?

I haven’t come across any here, but if I do, I’d like to be able to aid in swift action against not only the post/account in question, but against the actual person running it.

I just made a post about this at the same time as Philo.

This is fucking gross. I get that trolls are going to try to fuck with subs, but can we please place a limit on brand new accounts or possibly require posts from this hosting site Mintboard to get vetted by a human? I also sent a message to a mod at lemm.ee. That’s the home instance of the two accounts.

For the record, admins have been screaming for more moderation capability but lemmy devs (all two of them) have been focusing on things that let lemmy stay online at all given the platform wasn’t ready for the massive user growth.

If you have the ability to build these features, I’m sure they will be added with gratitude. Otherwise, development is happening as fast as it can. The devs have applied for sponsorship to allow a third dev to help, but this hasn’t been awarded yet.

Some admins have built tools that help, but given there are 1,000 instances, it’s easy to belong to an instance without such tools. There’s also a complex setup of which posts are removed from where when a moderator removes something.

I really appreciate this insight. I know there’s a lot I don’t know. Do you have any specific advice on how I can help? I’m not really a software developer, but I know Python. Is there any way I can volunteer or donate to help make these features come to fruition?

The Lemmy backend is written in Rust and I’m not aware of any Python components (though I’m no expert), you could possibly look at making (or helping with an existing) 3rd party tool. The Lemmy Matrix space has a chat for mod tools, you could try asking in there.

In terms of donating, every Lemmy instance has a little heart at the top that links to a donation page that goes to Lemmy devs. This is different to donating to your instance (which goes towards hosting costs), donating to Lemmy devs goes towards development of the Lemmy software. The Lemmy donating link leads to https://join-lemmy.org/donate

Yeah that shit was shocking. First I’ve seen it on Lemmy. Reported with “child” because I couldn’t remember the acronym

Posts have been removed and user has been banned. Also submitted the Mintboard stuff to admins and myself/other mods have recommended for it to be added to the blacklist of banned sites.

I just checked, and there’s no posts including anything even remotely child related going back days on this community. Did you post in the wrong spot?

Well, it was most likely fake anyway, but it isn’t like fake kiddie porn is a good thing either. Sorry you ended up seeing whatever it was.

sh.itjust.works removed it locally for their instance hence why you dont see it. Hasnt been removed in the source instance though yet so instances that didnt remove it locally still have it

SJW_Bot2 is really effective at autobanning spam and CSAM nearly instantly. Unfortunately, this does little to alleviate the problem for other instances, unless the spammer happens to make their account on SJW.

So now I just have to wonder why people aren’t reporting things they clearly have issues with going by some comments on things in the communities I moderate.

FYI to users who need to understand: Most of the other mods aren’t online often and even if I myself am around most of the time, I’m not scrolling single communities; not even the ones I moderate. I rely on the reports to get my attention. So please use the report function if you see something that you know doesn’t belong/violates the rules/is child porn/etc.

Reports are typically fine. Theres a couple issues with 0.18 but the amount of people reporting would make up for that. Removed it locally from my instance since some reports came to me fine

I assume it will be snapped soon by lemm.ee or world but its around midnight in the US right now and early morning in europe

The report feature is working in 0.18 and 0.19. Admin/mod probably asleep and the asshole know what time to attack. I just banned and purged that asshole from my instance.

Ah yes, the story of every Discord server admin. People always tend to know when someone is asleep for some reason.

Not really a “point”, just an observation. People wishing to do harm, for some reason, always know when the watchers are away. Like your routine might not even be public, and you turn away for one hour, and suddenly you have to spend the next three cleaning after people.

Ahh, i see. I think it’s either they guessed when to strike based on the country of origin of the mods, or it’s coincidence.
