I feel like we’re regressing back to the Netscape Navigator/Internet Explorer browser war days, when browsers were openly and intentionally breaking functionality on competing sites.
You’re right. It does have the same energy to it, doesn’t it? But of course, it also feels like that kind of regression permeates nearly every layer of society now, which is really sad. We should get angry before it’s too late.
Some of us have been fucking furious for over two decades now and it hasn’t done shit except increase our blood pressure and having all the dumb fucking dimwits around us acting like we’re crazy for being upset at how absolutely fucked things are.
I’ve been angry since my early twenties. I’m in my forties now and I’m still angry but guess what I’m fucking tired. Which is what the people in charge want, of course. They want us so broken by this system that we give up on fighting back because it’s hard to fight back when you’ve been diagnosed with a fucking disease that will bankrupt you financially.
They have us right where they want us, and most people are too toothlessly uneducated to even fucking know it’s going on and get so so upset when you get angry for good fucking reasons. “Please calm down” bullshit from motherfuckers enabling the shit streaming down our fucking faces. It’s fucking lunacy.
We live in a beautiful Corpocracy and you will fucking love it, god damn it!! Drink the Disney to distract and calm your weary mind. Consume more and you will feel alive again. Promise! Ignore the crimes of the corporations, without those you wouldn’t have The New Thing you adore and you wouldn’t be yearning for The Next Thing! You NEED The Next New Thing.
Its fucking sickening. I’m in my early 30s and it feels hopeless. Surely the masses can see the sheer manipulation and control that governments and corporations have over us. Why aren’t more people irate that They are raping the Earth to line Their pockets, fucking Us over in the process?
Everyone has been polarised into an “Us vs Them” mindset. Keep us divided and channeling our collective rage at each other, lest we actually find power in our overwhelming numbers. It hurts.
theres a marxist term for the last paragraph, whats the word for it?
Alienation maybe? I’d just describe it as divide and conquer which is a pretty common Marxist description of capital’s political strategy
nope, it’s about how the bourgeouis make the proletariat fight each other rather than them
Everyone has been polarised into an “Us vs Them” mindset. Keep us divided and channeling our collective rage at each other, lest we actually find power in our overwhelming numbers. It hurts.
I’m ready to get downvoted, but this is exactly the reason I’m incredibly sceptical about any conflicts going on, including wars. I just think the possibility of the “two sides” working together just to polarize society is too goddamn high. But of course, as soon as you bring a subject like this into a discussion, you immediately get bombarded with the “you are against my idea so you’re an extremist” kind of vocabulary… For example: “Omg you’re pro-russian” - meanwhile I volunteer to help Ukrainian people, but I guess I love Russia when I do that. Shit’s wild…
It’s domestic as well. Red vs Blue is just a distraction and you can’t point this out because nearly everyone is divided along those lines to the point of ignoring getting fucked up the ass.
I think Roosterteeth did a better job than just “a distraction”.
Let’s give them some credit
Divide and conquer…
opportunists would gather around a piece of shit if it benefited them
I haven’t really seen my exact situation & frustration put so perfectly.
I know it’s exhausting, but just reading this helps remind me that I’m not alone.
So just know, you’re not alone.
There are at least 3 of us
Dozens.
Worse. We are directly headed for the Novel Messenger vs. Lotus Notes times.
Only the things you brought from your connector supplier will work.
Lotus Notes. NEVER AGAIN.
This comment brought the word GROUPWISE thundering back from the depths of my lower consciousness, where I had worked so hard to relegate it.
Also pushing pop-ups everywhere, except this time they’re part of the site and we can’t easily block them.
javascript was a mistake

I only use my programming for good. For instance Bat_Count.exe lets the user enter a number and then the Count from sesame street will count to this number and say “Ah ah ah!” at the end.
Is there a git? Pleeeeese let there be a git!
count.bat sounds a lot cooler.
Even Avogadro’s number?
Shouldn’t have anything to do with bats, then.
How many molecules in the air the bats are flying through?
One, ah ah ah… Two, ah ah ahhh … Hold on, this might take a while
<3
I’m interested
Does it run with wine on Linux?
“5E3”
I assume they wrote it as 5000 and it got changed to 5E3 by the minifier as it saves a byte?
Yeah that’d be my guess. Minifiers squeeze every byte.
true
andfalse
get minified to!0
and!1
respectively.Lol
html programerz dont do that/s
this all youtube thing is kinda depressing as it highlights how much the web is dependent on this platform, there are and will be no “exits” or blackouts, no alternative platforms, and as much as we’d like to think that we “the users” are heard or in control, we aren’t :(
Not with that attitude. There is no reason we can’t cultivate alternatives like PeerTube. No video platform starts with a massive library and if we actually want to take back our digital rights then we have to put our foot down and give a hard “no” to trading those rights away just because we really want to watch a particular creator on a corporate platform. It’s the only way to not only stick it to Google but also let creators know that viewers will not tolerate the likes of Google.
I think the hosting is the real problem. For something like Lemmy where it’s just text it’s not too expensive, but when you need to store and stream videos for free I have to imagine most people wouldn’t be able to afford that without charging for it and the moment you start charging you can’t compete with YouTube anymore
i think the solution could be a FOSS torrenting site where everyone hosts their own videos (or maybe a stream only site?). people are already willing to fork over for netflix so maybe if the content quality was extremely high theyd shift (e.g. nebula)
Yep, this is already a solved problem via torrents. All that’s needed is a site (like lemmy or something else) to host the links, and help with content discovery.
dessalines can you make a poetry community on lemmy.ml
oh what weird i thought i had looked it up, thank you!
Nebula could be a good case study in how well this would work. The content on there is of exceptional quality. To be honest, though, that’s not always what I’m looking for. Sometimes I just want a bunch of garbage rather than a little high quality content. The big social media platforms put a bunch of it in one place. I know it’s not really a good thing, but sometimes I just need background noise while I do other shit and random YouTube videos really does it for me.
I can’t seem to find any data on how much of Nebula’s revenue is actually due to the Curiosity stream tie-in, but I know even I was wary of the $5/mo subscription without the CuriosityStream sub to sweeten the deal. So maybe even the world’s largest creator-owned streaming platform needed that investment.
Yeah, I’ll let you know when anyone I watch even considers giving peertube a moment of consideration.
This is so much better because of the Geordi template.
Drake is a creep.
This seems like a pretty dumb thing to do to try to wipe out a browser with 2% marketshare.
“I’m switching from Chrome because they killed ad blocking.”
“OMG! Firefox takes 5 seconds to even load webpages! I’ll just go back to Chrome.”
The goal is to prevent the competition from growing.
The EU should investigate this
Do not worry Vestager lives for shit like this. She’ll make them bend over, take it deep, and pay her for her pleasure.
It won’t stay at 2% if it’s the only browser with a working adblocker.
Unfortunately said browser is dependent on Google financing Mozilla.
I don’t know why this got downvoted. Google gives Mozilla a hefty paycheck to remain the default search engine on Firefox.
Obviously there a people in charge now who will never understand the Streisand effect. They could have kept it quiet and just… allow… the technical adept users to do their thing. Now, they are the laughing stock and get unwanted attention. Also, from my layman understanding, this shit won’t fly in the EU at all.
Or, to say it differently: This is the best thing to happen to Mozilla in quite a long time and I’m a fan.
I’m out of the loop. What happened? Did someone decompile their code and find definitive proof of a throttle for Firefox?
To be fair, they used setTimeout() and not thread.sleep() because the latter isn’t possible out of the box in JS ^^
Users who have ad blockers installed may experience suboptimal viewing
Yeah let me turn off the adblocker just for having an even more suboptimal viewing due to ads. They’re lunatics.
Thanks for the explainer! Also, Google’s response is such a crock of shit.
JavaScript is an interpreted language, so no decompilation is necessary, although this is repeatable by using a Firefox user agent.
You can build a virtual machine in JavaScript and execute compiled code on it
Just because you can…
Oh yeah, you shouldn’t. But people do this for fingerprinting, bot detection, and other “adversarial” scenarios where you really don’t like the person executing your code. It’s somewhat plausible Google would use this technique to do something scummy like this (although that is not the case).
Relevant article and a great read: https://www.nullpt.rs/reverse-engineering-tiktok-vm-1
Neat
I’m guessing that it’s a way for them to test if ads have been loaded after initial scripts have run, but I’m not going to dig into the code.
Honestly, the whole ads thing is missing the point. If you desired a public video hosting platform, that needs to be a tax-funded commons. Video hosting and streaming is very expensive. Similarly, users should be donating to keep Lemmy going:
As long as working around it is as easy as it is nowadays, I just think it’s funny.
Funny, or pathetic?
Probably both.
marketing and bean counters drag down every good idea. That and the belief all the world’s problems can be solved in one paragraph. I used to return a 5 second sleep for bad login attempts. Just to slow down the bots trying to brute force a login. video over increasingly cheap bandwidth for a screen the size of a postcard will soon be replaced with a simpler solution. This is progress. another one bites the dust.

so is rumble lol
I don’t understand why people don’t pay for YouTube premium. Best streaming service I pay for. No ad blockers required. When I watch YouTube at someone else’s house the ads drive me nuts.
Fuck google that’s why
100%. It’s the principle of the thing. I don’t care how good YouTube Red is, simply the fact that they pulled as much bullshit as they have in an attempt to sucker people into paying for it warrants a total and permanent boycott. What Google is doing is utterly unacceptable and I’m not going to reward them for abusing my digital rights.
Then why are you using Google’s services
Are you familiar with the network effect?
I am. It’s just ironic to say “fuck Google” while continuing to depend on Google’s service
You people are arguing that YouTube should be hosting videos without asking for any compensation. You will continue blocking ads no matter how many of them there are.
I hope YouTube just completely paywalls itself so this whining can end already.
because it’s insanely difficult to get along completely without YouTube. Or if you happen to have some kind of business it’s easier said than done to “just not optimize” for Google products or “just not use Google services” like having a Google Maps entry. On a side note, even getting a privacy focused smartphone without using Google services and products is near to impossible (e.g. GrapheneOS only works on Pixel phones…)
Not that easy not to use the services of the big tech companies, is it? I don’t get why you would even give them extra money if their main profit is selling your data anyways. The only solution I see is to try to establish independent, people owned spaces/websites and so long the majority is under control of the big tech, don’t feed them your data and don’t feed them any money either.

it’s too expensive to begin with. 14$/month ? Netflix is more expensive to run and is cheaper. I would be fine paying 5€/month tho.
-
at this point YouTube made a point I was not an acceptable client for them (5s delay because I’m not using the company mandated browser) so I’m not supporting that.
You want my money Google? You already did. I bought a fucking pixel 8 pro because it’s a goddamn amazing phone. Do the same with YouTube.
the pixel phones are great, I had the 7 and now the 8 pro. it pains me to see Google’s business decisions with everything else
It’s not too bad if you do it in a family plan and split the cost. I pay under £5 a month for it
-
(a) because it’s too expensive, and (b) it didn’t take a lot of DDGing to find “why am I still getting ads with YT Premium” and it turns out there are a bunch of exceptions that the YTP page doesn’t tell you about.
If it was less expensive and provided some privacy i would probably happily pay for it.
Because adblocking is free and if done right not detectable. I haven’t had a single issue with ublock on youtube.
I used to pay for premium but they keep upping their prices. At this point ublock on computers + revanced on phone is best way to go. Premium features without paying a cent.
Agreed. I’m on a family plan and I find that I’m getting my money’s worth, plus saving myself the headache of participating in this cat-and-mouse game.
I’m willing to bet the people who use adblockers and say “fuck Google” in this thread never considered donating to the developers of said adblockers for letting them dodge YouTube’s fee.
