Summary

Donald Trump suggested Canada could become the U.S.’s “51st state,” claiming it would benefit Canadians through lower taxes and military protection.

The remark follows tensions over Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on Canadian imports, which shocked Canadian leaders, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who likened it to betrayal.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dismissed the annexation talk as unserious but unveiled a $1 billion border security plan to address U.S. concerns.

The escalating rhetoric, including insults from Trump ally Elon Musk, highlights strained Canada-U.S. relations ahead of Trump’s second term.

Much more likely with him taking over is the West and East Coast split up and became Canadian provides and him ending up rolling the fly over zone.

Strange that you think the current border ramp-up has nothing to do with the orange asshole threatening our sovereignty.

We’re not typically a super nationalistic people, but threaten to back a coup to take us over and you might find out just how staunch we are to never be an American.

Canadian cucks cheering for the idea of “Joining as a state/states” don’t realize Canada’s future would essentially be that of Puerto Rico for decades, Second class citizens, if we could even call them that, full rights and protections wouldnt apply. and thered also be a complete devastation of the land and infrastructure to boot as one nation tries to forcefully assimilate another.

Surrender your Sovereignty and have no representation to own the libs. YEA 'BERTA

Nah, I say we don’t conquer Canada so much as just become a Canadian unincorporated territory without the consent of the Canadian parliament.

We could come together and issue a grand historic Declaration of Dependence.

It wouldn’t though. It would be reapportioned. It’s locked at 435 due to the 1929 Permanent Apportionment Act. You’ll note that 1929 precedes the introduction of both Alaska and Hawaii as states.

The house being locked to that number diminishes the legislative (and electoral college) power of larger states (which is infuriatingly by-design).

The house needs to balloon massively anyway. The numbers are way under where they have been historically for representatives per capita.

Aren’t Canadians less conservative on average, than Americans?

So sure thing. Republicans might never win an election ever again. Look at all those sweet sweet electoral votes.

Or make it even better, admit each Canadian Province as a separate state, Republicans may never control a majority in the Senate ever again.

      less conservative on average

Yes. But, like states, provinces are each all over the spectrum, from “nice” to “winnebago aristocracy hoodwinking the farmers”. Themselves, some of them would support a bully from whom they cribbed their ‘tough guy’ drivel.

Not really. When people say that, they tend to be focused on healthcare. Which is fair, because US healthcare is barbaric. However, when you open it up to other issues–gay marriage, trans rights, anti-racisim–suddenly the US doesn’t look so far to the right. At least, not in terms of public opinion vs what its government actually does.

Well, gerrymandering is still a thing, but anyway it would be like adding another California to the US, electorally. The populations are pretty close. And actually, the less-populous provinces are a little more conservative (the truckers protesting covid restrictions were canadians, remember), so actually maybe each individual province being added as a state would work in Trump’s favor.

Not that he’s thought any of that through, of course.

I’ll put a fancy old person and a loon on some coins for better healthcare.

At this point, a functioning democracy with a symbolic regent is a hell of a lot more grounded than a broken democracy trying to find its way to something a little more autocratic.

prefer the US become Canada’s 11th province

Whoa whoa; not all of it. Let the adjacent regions ask to be a province and we’ll see how ‘good’ a ‘fit’ they are. I mean, Cascadia will be a good fit, MAYBE some of their adjacents. East coast is hit-and-miss, but largely hit. The middle, though. Yeesh. Probation for sure.

Washington (or at least Seattle) seems somewhat compatible with BC. Montana is probably a reasonable match with Alberta and Saskatchewan.
North Dakota is far too MAGA to fit with the NDP voters in Manitoba.

Not sure how well the states bordering Ontario would get along with douggie ford’s government.

I doubt any of Quebec’s southern neighbors would be thrilled about having to learn French.

I get unreasonably indignant when a person or machine won’t accept my Canadian coins. It’s totally fair since it’s “foreign currency”, but … C’mon. Not accepting Canadian quarters is just petty.
