Thanks to anyone who approves me to join for Lemmy through this lemmy.ml instance.

P.S., I tried three times to sign up through the lemmy.world instance, but it failed. 🥲

One of them, @nutomic is the other, but we have a ton of contributors now. Glad to have you.

  • Welcome, friend!

I’d advice you to be cautious with lemmy.world, it’s turning into a new Reddit

(and it’s bad for the network/federation to have such large centralised instances anyway. So you’d help keep the network healthy by choosing an instance besides .ml and .world)

Hello and welcome! I didn’t see a couple things mentioned that I thought were very helpful to me with the instance choosing, so I just wanted to pass it along…

If you look at your account kinda like an email, all the emails can communicate with each other, just like the instances can communicate. Though, an instance can also block another so thay it can not be seen/interacted with. Like, gmail deciding they will no longer accept yahoomail, for example.

.ml has been blocked by a variety of others, so you may be missing out on some interests elsewhere, that you would enjoy.

I use an app and have a few different accounts, the app lets me just swap my sign in profiles back and forth as I like. Sometimes a server goes down or an update goes bad. Having another account let’s you check in on the action, on those who are still up and running while the other gets worked on. You can even use the same name, your @ will just change.

Initial sign up is roughest step really… but not much harder than grabbing a new email!

OK, that was more than a couple, hopefully something was helpful though and helps your experience here!

That’s exactly what I thought. Instances is like email providers. I just hope that we can use just a single handle that can choose different kind of instance just like Reddit. It’ll a lot more easier I guess.

Ya I use different accounts on Lemmy to customize my home feed right now since Lemmy doesn’t have a multi reddit-like feature yet. Also, every now and then an instance goes down, had technical problems, or people randomly decide to defederate with it. That person’s advice is pretty good. I mostly stick with this account now, but I feel better knowing I have a backup lol.

Welcome to Lemmy! I hope you have a great time here! 😃

Sometimes instances can have technical problems, but they are usually short-lived. It’s fun to explore other Lemmy instances though!

Keep trying on other instances unless your views align with .ml. Otherwise you’ll be automatically deemed a tankie by a lot of people and that might alter your experience on the fediverse.

    Welcome to Lemmy!

Thanks for the advice, mate. But, can I simply move to the other instances or I need to make a new account in that particular instance that I want to move?

You’ll need to sign up for a new account on the other instance. I’d recommend you persevere with getting a lemmy.world one and use that as your main one. Keep the one you’ve got in case of an lemmy.world outage.

Content is generally shared amongst the main instances so you’ll generally be able to see the same stuff wherever you create an account. Most of the Lemmy apps have multi-account functionality so you can add both.

I would advise against lemmy world and .ml, .world is already way too big, the day they fail, all lemmy will collapse. Place like lemm.ee or sopuli or Blahaj, or Fedia if you prefer mbin are way nicer.

That said, .ml works good enough to discover lemmy, don’t panic too much

Seconding this. I originally came from lemmy.world, but eventually mained on lemm.ee after some really bad downtime issues around July/August 2023.

I also keep accounts on other instances as a backup, but I sort of use them as separating different interests, like my lemmy.dbzer0 account is for the tech-related interests, while this one is the more general one. If ever I follow more anime-related communities, I might make one on an anime-centric instance.

They can ban you from posting on their server.

Theoretically they could also ban your account but i never heard of that.

Yeah ml is ran by the main lemmy dev is my understanding who is a notorious tankie

But i think they will ban you from posting on subreddits on their server but you would still be able to use your lemmy.ml accoumt to post on lemmy.world subreddits.

It’s pretty simple in general: .ml is pretty much left leaning or straight up communist/socialist, while .world is mixture of the rest meaning centre to right (as everyone leftist is already on ml or hexbear, or lemmygrad).

All 3 are pretty active, although the bottom one is a bot community hat automatically finds rising and popular communities in the fediverse. The top two are similar, but one seems to be about just generally bringing attention to communities people want more users in (community promo), and the other is about advertising newly created or revived communities (new communities).

I personally subscribe to all 3, but I’m always trying to find new communities to add to my home feed. I prefer using that over All or Local.

Msg the .world mods to see why it failed. I had to make one on .world as .ca was having email issues, once I msgd the .ca admins they said “Damn it!” and added me manually, good luck

Glad you’re liking it so far, welcome!

Just a word of warning, however. The instance you’re on is rabidly authoritarian communist and they have to proselytize, if you say anything bad about China or Russia (and to a lesser extent, Iran, North Korea, really anyone who doesn’t like “The West™ блять”) you’ll likely be banned. If that happens, try any other instance other than lemmygrad or hexbear which are more of the same but worse, all the rest (like db0, .ca, .ee, .world, etc) are cool.

I warn you, because sometimes it ends up taking people by surprise who thought they were joining a general instance not a “marxist-leninist” instance (especially now that they pretend that isn’t why they chose .ml, 3 years ago they admitted it but now they downplay it to fool the newcomers.) Sometimes it turns people off the fediverse entirely (because y’know, murderous idiots aren’t great company) but I just wanted to say that while you’d still have to deal with those people due to federation the mods on other instances don’t have their back and you won’t be banned from say .world for saying the Chinese government is a problem. Finally I’d like to add that there are instances which don’t federate with the worst two, hexbear and lemmygrad, but not many that don’t federate with .ml.

you won’t be banned from say .world for saying the Chinese government is a problem

Because this is literally their agenda. Try saying anything relatively positive or neutral about any of those countries on .world and see how “non-authoritarian” they are
