The bass is fucking awesome!
Overnight (our night) there have been strange reports coming in from agricultural hubs around the world. Cows and similar bovines appear to have all at once changed their signature “moo” sound, puzzling farmers, biologists, and even physicists. The sound these bovines are now making has been described as follows:
spoiler
GOOOOOOOONseeGOOOOONseeGOOOOOOON
Edit: it appears that birds capable of producing human sounds have also begun what can only be described as a chant
So that’s what woke me up this morning. Good to know so thanks Force. I was beginning to worry.
Mission for the morning. Queue for the closing day sale at the best pie shop ever. ‘Tis an utter tragedy.
Out of curiosity I googled “Melbourne pie shop closing down” and… wow, so many! Too many in the past few years 😢(My local is hanging on, but business rental prices in my area have skyrocketed and a lot of shops that have been there for years have closed. Including my beloved computer repair guy who’d been there since 1986 or something.)
These guys it’s both rent and ingredients. They refuse to use shit and would apparently have to charge $14 a pie to keep as is 😿
That’s tragic but also understandable. Working in elite food environments and having a partner who was a chef opened my eyes to a lot of things. If the integrity of the ingredients is paramount to you then it’s so hard to compromise for the sake of $.
Victory! Well mostly. They are out of almost everything. Anyone not already in the queue will be disappointed.
My plan today: go to the market. My strategy is to give every member of the household a limit, say $40. The ones who want to spend more will negotiate with those who don’t spend that much and it’s great to see the kids in action making deals with their father and each other over who’s getting what.
Always good to involve everyone in the budgeting. I learned from an early age to keep an eye out for specials, compare by unit pricing etc. to keep the overall food budget down - if you get the cost of the boring stuff lower you have room to add in important stuff like lollies!
When I moved out at 18 I discovered that most of my peers had no idea how to stick to a budget or prioritise their spending - an alarming number would run out of food entirely before the end of the fortnight, then when they got paid they’d waste it on expensive stuff and start the cycle again. I was really surprised, I’d been shopping on a budget and planning ahead with my Mum for years.
Lol same, I lived with people who spent their entire food budget in a few days 🤦🏼♀️I was living on about $25 per week but it was easier then. I’d get a bag of spuds, bag of onions, garlic, big bag of red or brown lentils, some budget cans of tomatoes, dried pasta, rice, a bag of apples, a couple of key vegetables that were cheap and in season and a couple of packets of herbs/spices (thus building a supply of herbs and spices over time available to enhance my cooking). I would combine these ingredients in different ways over the week to try to make it interesting. When it was someone’s birthday I’d lash out on a King Island Brie and red wine. I’ve probably never eaten so well lol.
Budgeting and also knowing good deals and seeing one an under appreciated skill.
I found a ripping deal on ham this week and bought quite a bit of it and made really nice sandwiches out of them and couldn’t be happier.
It absolutely is - it also needs to be paired with the ability to cook and menu plan well.
A lot of people have the basic skill set of being able to choose a recipe, buy the ingredients and make a meal, but don’t have the ability to reverse the process and create something based on which ingredients are available. Which works well for me, I have often ended up with things like trays of meat left over from events because people don’t have any idea what to do with them (or have a mental block against “leftovers”).
Mix and mash all the stuff together. What could go wrong?
I’m fairly simple so if there were trays of meat you could pair it up with rice, pasta, sandwich, noodles just on a basic level. Nothing fancy or complicated but maybe I just don’t have any good ideas in my head.
I think my budget was $50 a week, but that included odds and ends like toiletries and magazines as well as food. It also included meat, although not huge amounts. My staple meal was stir-fry, with lots of rice and veg and a small amount of meat (about 60-80g per meal). I would cut up the meat into strips for the freezer (I had a bar fridge with freezer space designed to hold a couple of trays of ice-cubes!) so something like a single chicken thigh would cover a few meals.
I also had a butcher that would sometime have whole wild rabbits for a couple of dollars, so I’d use the meat from those for a stew & make a soup from the bones.
30/50 could easily be worse.
10/50
Tin arse: 20 with some very lucky guesses.
I got one wrong. Just happy I got the animal ones correct haha
Exactly the same. 30/50 about half were lucky guesses
20/50 today. About average for me.
15 🥲
Morning. I’m contemplating making a big breakfast
Morning! I just got back from the cafe, where I ate a big breakfast. Would recommend
I knew what this was before I clicked it 😂
My sister says: don’t you fuckin ruin mother’s day again 😂😂
🥳🙌
I could do with a big breakfast today. I think it’s somewhat decent outside as well to boot.
Going out for fancy breakfast this morning to a cafe near a post office. Nice food and the boys can post our council votes for us.
If I ran a cafe near a mailbox I’d do a post about it to remind people to send off their votes and come enjoy a coffee while you’re at
If I could vote I’d definitely get in on this
DEMOCRACY COFFEE
If I ran said cafe I’d have an October long special of some overpriced cafe version of a sausage sandwich for that election day feel
Would you do different versions for each of the major parties or something like that?
People could mention their party affiliation and I could do different options for them. Like vegan for the greens, Mayo for labour, and whatever’s lying around for liberal
I need to buy some shoes and vote. Righto
In what order though? That’s very important.
I voted, posted the ballot and bought shoes in more or less a straight line
Not bad. Nice and efficient!
My only regular shift that they cancelled would’ve ended at 10. It’s 11 and I just woke up. So nice to not be waking up at 6 on a Sunday.
Very slow start to cleaning today but I’ve cleared out a lot of junk hiding in the kitchen (years of plastic packaging that I meant to throw at redcycle, old teas and boxes of nuts) and tidied under the sink which is the one set of cupboards I know they’ll check with good reason.
Off to meet friend and try to keep spirits up…
Alright, lamb shanks are in the slowcooker! Excited af about this. Never had them at home before. Well, except for the frozen pre made ones.
I’ve got a few pretty politically conservative types in my extended family. Mostly we’ve always been able to have decent conversations but more and more it seems like the information they quote is so different from the information I see about the world I don’t even know where to start. No …I don’t think Trump helped the American economy last time but I don’t even want to start to explain why I think that. And no we are not being held back by Greenies … I just can’t even find common ground.
Argh. Woken up late and have to make the transition back to early wake up tomorrow.
Save me!
Would you like to employ our services
Tell me about these “services”.
It involves at least one (1) lawnmower and one (1) illegally employed screaming child
I’ll have one order of that for 6am tomorrow.
Your request has been received and is being processed.
Would you like to know more!?
Yes!
No
Why do people feel the need to use their most loudest voice possible when they are outside and only a couple of metres away from each other?
I call it loud noise disease.
Sounds like kids to be honest. They can’t control their voice volumes either.
I have no idea why people do that. Bad hearing?
No, not children. Adults.
Oh sorry I knew that. Just saying kids have the same problem with voice control and how loud they are.
There was outside idiots and inside idiots having a convo.
Widespread solipsism?
