USB is 5v output, the laptop adapter is (likely) 19v output. The power consumption is therefore higher by almost 4x with the laptop adapter.

This is the most likely problem. There is no way the output from fdisk should be different between the two connections (the USB and SATA) if they are both working correctly.

I always referred to them as “Read Only Fridays”.
