That’s Warmbo’s show, right?
That’s Warmbo’s show, right?
I’ve seen this in various threads on Lemmy. I’m sure Kagi has some cool features, but I don’t know how any search engine can overcome the walled garden effect that is plaguing the internet today. The data just isn’t out there to be curated anymore, it’s locked behind the hedges of the different sites.
I think search might have been killed. I expect in my lifetime, we’ll have to sign all our communications using encryption to keep algorithms from impersonating us online to trick people into buying stuff. I’m kind if surprised there isn’t an organized resistance collecting legit reviews.
That makes sense. In a recommendation thread, PIA or Nord would be the highest voted VPN, but if you read the comments and see your fellow privacy nerds talking about Mullvad, you might choose that because privacy is important to you. I also find popularity does not always corelate with quality.
I know Glassdoor has issues. I didn’t know they allowed suppression of comments. I imagine a former employer of mine would have gladly paid $$$ to fix their 1.7* rating rather than actually pay us more so we could actually give them a higher rating. Instead they had new hires rate the place highly before they got dumped into the live operation. Still one of the lower ranked companies on Glassdoor.
I found a few similar sites that seem more “pure”, but they really only work for the tech industry.
I agree with you about the torrent of sewage. Its hard to find good data. Honestly, a 1yr pre-enshittification reddit dataset searched with Ctrl+F is likely better at answering many questions than today’s google search.
This tip worked well in '22-'23 before reddit hit peak enshittification. Agreed on the time. Researching what you are getting is not as easy as it once was.
I never appreciated snapshots until I ran a server. I used to just install a new distro whenever anything significant went wrong. Now I use them everywhere.
Thank you for the incredibly detailed and patient reply. I will try some additional applications like Jellyfin and Immich instead of the built in synology stuff. It was always my intention to have docker images running on a separate server but stress went up and free time went down and I settled for using the built in applications. Luckily, I havent significantly invested in video center as I just used it to preview files while sorting in DSM.
I had some issues with copying files over SMB. I can write fine, I can delete, but copying seems to fail. My guess is because the local user on my laptop is different than the user on the SMB share. In any case, I was using the file explorer in DSM in Firefox to sort through old media by hand. I’ll have to use NFS and continue to sort via Dolphin.
I’m glad to hear the situation isn’t as dire as I had initially imagined. Perhaps I’m a bit shell shocked from all the enshittification that I jumped to worst case scenarios.
That is a package like “tidal-hifi” or something like that that can basically put the web app on your linux desktop ad an app.
I can’t switch from Celsius to Fahrenheit, the switch just reverts. I do think it looks beautiful and has weather stats that I use when I bike but other apps don’t always have (air quality, UV) .
They really shouldn’t be allowed to name anything after a single letter. VW, BMW, ABC, TBS are all bad enough. X conflicts with too many established uses.
I can’t see a problem with fictional characters. It’s when you bring in the real people that the drama starts. Trans JK Rowling, KaMANla Harris, Hillbilly Eilish, and Marjory Taylor Peen all seem like they would raise a few eyebrows.
I don’t like using cashless anything because I know part of the cost is my privacy. Having said that, convenience is a powerful draw and cash can be a pain, especially when you have to find a spot for small coins.
My partner did this just recently. I just handed the phone to them with Lemmy open and said “he saw you”. :D
I dread every day I log into my work computer, not because I hate my job, which is one of the best I’ve ever had, but because I have to try to do it using Windows.
That sounds likes fascinating project. I Iove it when people do interesting projects instead of taking the low hanging topics like everyone else.
Minus the thing about pumping freezing air into a computer where it will condense and fry everything, is there a reason other than the noise why a big fan like this couldn’t effectively cool a computer?
If you would like to activate your heated bum that’ll be 19.99 USD /mo. I know we already installed the hardware, but you have to pay us to use it.
Yeah, you know there’s bound to be some juicy drama if they want to remove it so bad.
My German friends and family don’t believe me when I tell them how expensive internet and phone is in the US. They all think it’s expensive in Germany. Having said that, there are some big differences in take home pay.
The county assessors site for everything state and local. I will briefly check national, but I dont need the pageantry of network television to rile me up anymore than I already am.
