I would argue all streaming services have gone to shit. I’m not saying I encourage anyone to pirate that doesn’t want to. But I am saying i don’t blame a single soul that does.

As far as I’m concerned all those companies can go fuck themselves. They know that the less technical people will willingly keep paying so the ones they lose won’t matter.

I’m not familiar with Blue sky, do they advertise as federated or how exactly do they claim to differ from a regular platform like original Twitter?

Question on that topic, is blocking JavaScript generally advised in browser settings? I’ve tried it once or twice and noticed things like login buttons might not work. Any difference with using the extensions?

Thanks for the advice. It isn’t an end all if I can’t get it to work in this way. Just thought I’d give it a try since I saw there was a helper script for Proxmox. I wasn’t aware of the limitations that may come with this though. I guess either upgrading routers in the future for something for customizable may be a better option.

Both great questions. I did not check the hardware and I definitely should have…as far as passthrough I have not. I really only ran the helper script to install the Proxmox VM and configurations. I’ll have to check the settings when I’m back home to see what exactly it did.

Do you know if this is all windows or specific versions/on specific hardware? That’s such a weird thing to have effecting potentially all windows versions. Very interesting though, thanks for clarifying.

Not quite on topic but semi related… It’s reasons like this that I started reading privacy policies many times before signing up for a service.

People would be surprised at some of the extremely concerning things are listed in there. Some is for good reason but some stuff is absolutely unnecessary and should be an issue for some people.

I’ve heard PopOS/Linux Mint are great starters. I personally run ZorinOS which is based on Ubuntu. It’s beautiful, had built in customization, and has a free version (I paid for the pro version because I liked it so much and wanted to support it).

You’ll find occasional headaches in all Linux distros just because it’s not windows so compatibility can require work arounds depending what you wanna run. But it’s worth it. Feels so much faster and in your control which is nice. Also if you screw up the distro you can just boot another distro from the flashdrive you used to install in the first place (keep the ISO handy just in case ;) ).

Could you clarify on this a bit? I’m genuinely curious what the update did to the games as many use windows for the same.

TLDR: To make a long story short, Netflix used to be the crown jewel that had everything. Now they arguably have a much worse catalog, for a higher price, on a platform you can’t have your family members share because they live in another household.

I definitely see your point but I can also sympathize with the other point. The way I see it, the market is saturated with streaming services that all get, I assume, licenses to show different shows/movies.

Because of this, consumers are spreading their spending between platforms to potentially watch only specific shows. I would guess that most people really only have a few movies/shows they actually want to watch. The rest being filler.

As an example, maybe people bought paramount+ for Yellowstone. Sure maybe SpongeBob or others that they have, but compared to their entire offering, that’s only a few. Maybe that 10-15 dollars a month makes it worth it but when you keep raising it and offer worse items or cancel actually good shows while keeping alive shitty ones because they’re trending (subjective, I know) then that’s where the anger can stem from I think.

I think if you have a mini PC or something you don’t mins installing server specific OS on, proxmox VE is pretty great. It can be a bit of a headache depending on what you want to do but it also makes expanding your self hosting super easy/fun.

Proxmox let’s you created virtual machines or containers and easily manage them.

Currently I run a mini PC.(Beelinks are great for this and pretty cheap with more power than a raspberry pi)

2. Jellyfin as my media server

• looking to install home assistant and some others as well.

3. Tail scale to use as a VPN into my network privately from anywhere.

Simplest set up? No. But I also just started self hosting. You’re gonna hit some.headaches regardless but it’s also extremely rewarding and I’ve learned alot.

Edit: if you’re only wanting to run one thing (say jellyfin) . A raspberry pi with tail scale and jellyfin is how I started. Works just fine.

Ive been using proton for a little more than a year now and I think that the service is one of the best out there. That, and their privacy guides in their blog are great as well. I think abandoning ship this early isn’t really a need. I’ve abondonded things like Plex for jellyfin due to Plex starting to feel very commerical. As others have pointed out, the governing of the company may keep one individuals views from interfering with the products. With that said, if your beliefs swing opposite, i see how it can leave a bad taste and make it worth keeping an eye on the direction of the company.

Thanks for the explanation. That sounds quite promising. I updated Ubuntu one time and it basically broke a python project environment to where I had to reinstall the previous os again. Then of course reinstall everything else too.

Software/OS

• proxmox (so I can virtuaize what I Host on one machine)
• Ubuntu server in a VM
• jellyfin (media server)
• tailscale (to access my server from anywhere)

One of the top comments mentions starting with plex. I also recommend that. Jellyfin is cool but plex makes a lot of features such as sharing and subtitles much easier. You also can with jellyfin but it’s much more technical. The only reason I went away from it was I felt the direction plex was going seemed a little too commercial for me. And I also like to use open source when I can.
