  • I used to say JIF. Seemed intuitive and the argument about the creator made sense to me.

But I changed my pronunciation because another intuitive thing is that language does change and it’s rather democratic.

This person is exactly correct. All those other arguments are just quips. They’ve all got a counterpoint and as you use them, you damn well know the counterpoint exists. But the argument is fun so you keep at it.

Some of us just want a resolution. My view lost. It’s over.

I’m thinking the sync app will entice enough people with… differing views that the in-place gatekeeping will lose its bite.

I appreciate the FOSS ecosystem, but the people around here seem to think that you should never be able to sustain a living from writing software. Like I should just go back to construction and only write code on the side.

That attitude can kiss my ass.

I have most of the clients installed and sync is one. Honestly never paid a cent, never saw an ad, never felt compelled to pay for anything.

I sympathize with those concerned about its data tracking, which is supposed to only be there for the limited ad revenue. But the dev asking for payments for features? It’s nonsense to get up in arms about that.

You should be able to make a living off of development skills as long as it’s done ethically.

Edit: hey I am an idiot. I forgot that I set my phone’s dns to an ad blocker one. Without it, perhaps I would hate sync, lol.

  • To play devil’s advocate, I am more concerned with which people come over and not the quantity.

There’s a desire to see Reddit eat shit and I understand that. And seeing Lemmy take all of its users is part of that. But I honestly hated the average Reddit user, I don’t feel that way about Lemmy right now.

And I would also like to see the open source community stop splintering so much and start getting behind specific FOSS apps such that an app like sync won’t stand out so much in terms of polish.

I’d just rather be using a FOSS one. But damn has sync been a nice experience.
