The commander of the Estonian Armed Forces, General Martin Herem, has suggested that Western countries discuss and prepare for a possible blockade of the Russian Federation in the Baltic Sea. According to Herem, Estonia has the necessary means to achieve this goal, the Melitarny portal writes.

Herem pointed out that such a scenario is possible in the event of a Russian attack on any of the Baltic states and called on Poland, Sweden and Finland to take it seriously.

He pointed out that Estonia has mines and anti-ship missiles for a possible blockade of the Russian fleet.

The general explained that in the event of a Russian attack on the Baltics, it would be too late to think about defence; at the same time, the steps taken in advance would allow allies to provide air support to the Baltics.

It should be noted that Estonia is preparing for a possible attack from Russia. The country has strengthened its ground defence and modernised both anti-tank and anti-aircraft capabilities. Procurement of large calibre ammunition has begun. In the next two years, the country will put into service additional self-propelled howitzers, armoured personnel carriers, medium-range air defence and multiple rocket launchers.

We would like to add that many analysts believe that in the event of a victory in Ukraine, Russia may move on the Baltic states, as the Kremlin is paranoid about restoring the USSR to the borders in which it previously existed.

The problem is Estonia can’t hold out again Russia for very long. They just don’t have a large enough military.

Maybe nato needs to send troops to train them like 100k or so.

Estonia alone can’t, but with Finland, Sweden, Poland and eventually Germany, Denmark and Norway joining the fight russians have pretty slim chances to operate from Petersburg if they’re willing to challenge NATO. The bay is narrow enough that both finns and estonians need to be careful not to shoot each other across it with just modern artillery. That combined with pretty capable airforce and navy from Finland and Sweden says that Baltic sea is off limits to any kind of military actions. And additionally, an F-35 from Finland and a Gripen from Sweden could both reach St. Petersburg in about 30 minutes, so good luck to getting anything out of the harbor before it’s out of order.

I didn’t realize Estonia had already joined nato. When they talk about nations donating to Ukraine, Estonia tops the list based on gdp.

Sweden alone can sink any ship in the Baltic Sea but it’s obviously better if the politics are well forged beforehand.

We should already stop those shady oil tankers who transports russian crude, and secondly make it like the Bosphorus Strait ; No war vessels or vessels supporting (supporting as transporting goods) war are to get through.

Just dump a shit ton of mines in the gulf of Finland far enough east and the lagoon entrance at kalingrad and the Russians will most likely have to just sail ships out there to clear the mines.

There are surely ways to clear waters of mines to make usable lanes or “roads”.

It has to be done continuously and probably with other means like just shooting ships out of the water. So doing ih in concert with the other neighbours.

        You are right offcourse…

But if we have been watching the same Russian military operate in Ukraine… The skill level of the Russian military… The amount of ineptitude is staggering.

And the number of surface combatants they have is very much limited … especially compared to let’s say tanks, APC or Manpower…

So the risk for Russia is orders of magnitude larger if they end up boxed in… as I’m convinced they will have losses breaking out of a wet paper bag… let alone a sea inlet mined and patrolled by an adversary keen on not letting you just de-mine the inlet in peace.

Combine this with drones like sea baby… designed for aerial denial… it will be tough to say the least.
