          I chose to use arbitrarily a female pronoun, because using ‘they’ for a third person singular is incorrect. Sometimes it sounds better though.

      I changed my mind about rainbow flags in classrooms recently because the person arguing for them did not call me a nazi and instead made a good point.

        I haven’t heard an argument against them that isn’t based in hatred and bigotry. It’s a flag that signifies the acceptance of people being able to express love to each other in more ways than one. The flag, while generally rooted in definitions surrounding sexuality, is not a symbol of sex. The flag isn’t encouraging sexuality whatsoever, it signifies a culture of acceptance of people regardless of how they think or feel. Fighting to have it removed is just fighting against accepting people as they are, which is a quality that is also common to bigots, racists, homophobes, and Nazis. It isn’t okay to just start calling people names because of an opinion, but I can see how the conclusion could be made as a knee-jerk reaction to someone wanting to ban the flag.

          My argument was that a classroom is not the place to make statements like this. I don’t think there should even be the flag of the country there - we have flagpoles for that purpose. Putting them in the classroom is unecessarily divisive/provocative in my view. I say this as a person belonging in the very minority this flag represents.

          The argument that changed my mind is that having the flag there indicates to closeted students that said teacher is a safe person to come talk to if you’re dealing with difficulties in your life because of your sexuality. I think that was a good point that I hadn’t though of before so I changed my mind.
