You know the reason why they’re considering banning TikTok?

Do you think it’s to protect the people? Do you think it’s because Social media is Toxic af? Well guess what…it’s none of those things.

It’s only because China passed laws saying that companies that operated there had to be owned by the Chinese. America just did a big fat “Nuh uh, you!” - that’s all.

Your comment is just misinformation. The US government asked Tik Tok to sever it’s ties to its parent company and they refused. This is also not anything new as other countries and government bodies including India, Australia, Canada, the UK, parts of the European Union, and New Zealand have banned the app from official devices due to security reasons.

This isn’t a “America bad REEEEE” kind of moment.

This isn’t a “America bad REEEEE” kind of moment.

Feels like 70% of all content on Lemmy is “America bad reee”

EXACTLY! It’s a “China bad REEEEE!” kind of moment.

You missed the mark. Which was exactly the point I was making.

That would be called the populum fallacy. Just because something is popular, doesn’t make it right.

I notice none of you have actually provided any logical reasoning here that contradicted me, just reiterated the same “but others are doing it” stance.

Why is TikTok being banned? Because of 'surveillance"? Okay, then why isn’t facebook and others? – Oh because they’re part of the same allied group who have an agreement to spy on each others citizens (five eyes).

It’s basically saying “You’re okay to spy on Americans if you’re an ‘American’ company or at least one of the countries we’re allied with”…

But, we’re looking at a double-standard here. This is literally only being implemented because “ree china bad”.

Give me some good arguments here, that…CANNOT…also be applied to American social media companies, and you’ll have won this argument.

American social media is also not okay.

But this isn’t an either/or situation. We can shit on both.

And Tiktok, just like Facebook (and the CCP and the US government) deserves all the hate it gets.

But you’re not. That’s about as clear as water. None of this legislation has any effect whatsoever on American companies…

                Why?

Because this is a nationalism thing. Not a security thing. Not a health and well-being thing. This is a nationalism thing.

It’s also an Israel thing; lots of pro-palestine content on TikTok, and Israel wants that shit shut down.

While I would find an American tiktok ban funny, this satire/article gives me mixed feelings because the “tiktok ban legislation” they’re trying to pass, has some real dystopic shit hidden in it, behind the veil of “banning the Chinese”.

While China is definitely a problem to be dealt with, I think it’s become the new “Think of the children!”

As a Canadian, I’m much more concerned with America than China. You guys are much more of a problem for the average earthling.

It’s not about the videos. It’s about the owners having strong ties to the government. Who wants information. If it was the videos they wouldn’t care.

American (congress) will ban Tiktok # Americans will be banned from Tiktok

The title made it sound the other way around as if Tiktok is banning americans.

I don’t know any social networks right now other than Lemmy, but this sounds kind of thrilling.
