I don’t think he’ll be alive in 2028 TBH, but if he doesn’t hamberder himself to death before then, I think he’d run either way.

He’ll promptly either reincarnate or manifest as a zombie or vengeful ghost or something. Just out of spite. It’s a long shot but I’m calling it.

His followers will prop him up on a golden throne that they’ll swear is a “life support device”, and that it’s broadcasting a beacon into their minds that tells them what he wants them to do.

I really hope so but the absolute shit show when he does is going to be insane. The conspiracy theories will be like nothing ever imagined. It’s going to be nuts. I’d look forward to it but I could see it getting violent.

Yeah, I’ve been tempted to make an AskLemmy post based on that premise - “If trump dies on the campaign trail of presumably natural causes, what will the aftermath be like” conspiracy shitshow revolving around “Assassinated by the deep state” and/or “Biden directed CIA/FBI/SPLC/CCP/Pelosi to do it” is definitely going to emerge.

Trump is now the Republican Party. He defines it and has virtually no opposition. Even the primary candidates mostly ran on the idea that Trump should win.

However, he also has no successor. When he dies, there’s going to be a scramble to figure out who can be the Trumpyest. There’s not going to be an orderly handover of power. I think it’s going to fracture their voter base between traditional conservatives, who will back someone like Ted Cruz, and the batshit crazy ones, who will back a Don Jr type.

Trump, for want of a better term, has the charisma that the entire party is hanging off of right now. Republicans have handed the fate of their party over to this man, because they have no real policies to sell to voters, and Trump voters don’t care about policy. Once he’s gone, there’s no one waiting in the wings to take over.

There’sno similar phenomenon on the Democratic side. There’s a handful of candidates from 2020 that I could see running again, including Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg, as well as newer candidates like Newsom. There might be an attempt to make Harris the heir apparent, but there’s no ride or die candidate the way the gop is with Trump.

I’d love to see Ted Cruz and Ron DeSantis duke it out.

DeSantis actually scares me, he doesn’t give me the deranged lunatic vibes other Republicans have. He gives me the vibes of someone who wants power, and knows how to manipulate the people around him to get it. When I found out he was running for president I was actually a little scared because I thought he had a shot. I’m glad I was wrong in that respect. Let’s keep it that way, and avoid someone like that taking an elected seat.

TL;DR DeSantis gives me Hitler vibes.

my guess is that in that situation all of the trump sycophants will be so fractured trying to attract the cult that they won’t gain enough support to mount a meaningful challenge. they’ll be too busy knifing each other in the back. I’ve never seen game of thrones, but I hear that’s how a lot of it went.

Wishful thinking but the elites don’t mingle with the prolies, even if they are loyal idiots. I agree with Trump hopefully being dead by then. My guess is another DeSantis campaign but with some weird Trump martyrdom elements tbh. The cumulative conservative seething that 4 more years of Biden coupled with the death of their God Emperor will produce will rally them more than we’ve ever seen, I believe

Well, when he dies, I’m gonna create a ton of Parler and truth social bot accounts and spread conspiracy theories with the end goal of persuading idiots on the alt-right to mount write-in campaigns for Trump.

But I will absolutely not consider doing that until he is dead and buried.

For all his faults, Donald uniquely has the charisma to pull this act off. His children are all rizzless goofs. My personal feeling is that anyone trying to do “The Trump” will fail miserably. What we’re more likely to see is someone else come along with a different style but that’s also charismatic.

Yeah, everyone else trying to be Trump 2 has spilled their spaghetti. Ramaswamy even tried to out crazy Trump and make up for the batshit insanity of his ideas by just doing a Benny Shaps and talking fast, and he couldn’t beat old puddin’ fingers. DeSantis tried his ass off to set himself up as the rightful heir to the throne, and ended up speedrunning a failed campaign. Haley’s having better success by just trying to do her own thing. I kinda think that MAGA is really a cult of personality around Trump, and there isn’t really a MAGA movement without him.

Anyway, if he runs again in 2028, man, just drag America out behind the shed and put it down. It’s just getting too painful to watch.

I honestly thought DeSantis stood a better chance. He’s got the traditionally ideal resume, although he failed to really leverage that in his campaign, probably out of fear of angering the MAGA base. He’s certainly smarter than Trump and possibly more malevolent. But, he lacks the charisma and personality of a used care salesman and doesn’t have the Vince McMahon like faux tough guy image that Trump has spent a few decades honing.

Trump is a moron, but he’s smart enough to know that there is an alarmingly large segment of the American population for whom politics is like wrestling. He doesn’t have to deliver on jack shit. He just has to put on a great show and the "fans"will keep coming back for more and emptying their pockets for him on the way in. Hell, that’s what he’s done for his whole career.

Haley knows she can’t compete in that arena which is why she isn’t even trying. She’s hoping to pick up enough disgruntled traditional Republicans to make a dent but I’m not not sure there are enough left to give her any serious momentum.

He did serve for two terms. Back then, that was the most someone could do. The idea he could’ve been a monarch if he wished isn’t exactly accurate given the combination of public pressure, the way other founding fathers weighed in, and the fact that America’s then-neighboring allies the Haudenosaunee civilization was already a democracy superior to even the ancient Greeks.

I meant that with the perspective of someone in mind who lived back then and would’ve thought the Greeks were the bee’s knees. If you lived back then and thought someone was doing better than the Greeks, you would feel humbled because the prevailing idea was that the Greeks accomplished a lot of things that they didn’t actually accomplish.

Are you saying Clinton writes opinion pieces under the pseudonym John Pavlovitz?

Also, are you saying that politicians should just sit down and die when they don’t win something? I mean, based on your rhetoric, you seem like the exact kind of person that thinks all politicians should just die, so I wouldn’t be surprised.

He seems like he’s deteriorating rapidly, would be surprised if he made it to 2028. I expect if he loses in 2024 he won’t run again but will keep conning his followers for money and repeating the stale line that he never lost even when he did.

I almost hope he tries. I don’t think the Republican Party would even be deranged enough to endorse him. If he ran, it would be pure ego, and he’d run as an independent.

It would be sad, pathetic, and amusing all at the same time. After everything he’s done, he deserves that kind of humiliation.

Not really, but I don’t think it much matters.

If Trump hit upon a political strategy that is effective, then someone else will presumably use it, absent a change in the political environment.
