TOPLINE Several communities on social platform Reddit are considering protesting X owner Elon Musk after the billionaire made a gesture at a post-inauguration speech Monday that critics have likened to a Nazi salute, provoking Reddit forums to call for a ban against links to X, formerly known as Twitter.

KEY FACTS

  • Large subreddits such as r/nfl, r/f1 and r/nintendo, which collectively have millions of members, have either called for or instituted a ban on links to X, citing Musk’s controversial gesture.
  • Musk found himself in hot water this week after making the gesture, though he did not explain what he meant by it and has blasted critics who said it was a Nazi salute.
  • Subreddits like r/nintendo instituting the ban have alternatively allowed for members to share screenshots or videos of X posts as long as direct links to the Musk-owned site are not shared.
  • A moderator on r/pcgaming, a subreddit with 3.8 members, said the community has contemplated the ban on X links for some time, adding “X has become increasingly hateful, toxic and less and less moderated.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Even if Elmo wasn’t such an obvious fascist shit stain, the twitter experience is dog shit, especially for anyone not logged in. Can’t even read a thread while logged out.

Right? When I see a post of a video but it’s a twitter link, I don’t bother opening it because I know the video won’t load.

“X has become increasingly hateful, toxic and less and less moderated.”

This is key to me. I know it’s not because Elon has other instances of repeating Nazi, neo-Nazi, and fascist points, Twitter is such a terrible platform now that it is a no-brainer to ban it. There are other sources, let’s use them.

I don’t think they’ll do it, Elon would just take then to court (he’d probably lose) but yeah this is the guy who sued Top Gear and lost because 2 Teslas they reviewed actually broke down, he’s also sued companies for simply not wanting to advertise on twitter/X anymore.

That said although I think Reddit would win anything like that legally they seem like the type of company who would immediately cave and just put the links back.

As much as I don’t give a shit about Reddit… I’m happy to see any platform stop integrating with X content.

You don’t have to write controversial salute, you can use nazi salute.

I mean even if someone thinks he didn’t mean it or he was on drugs or something else or whatever, it clearly was a classic nazi salute.

Pig Boy Huffman is a Nazi himself, he’ll never ban links to a fellow nazi’s platform and I’m guessing will start purging mods who do ban those links.

Having had an account there for over a decade, and remembering Pao, I’ll absolutely take this bet.

Get your shit straight, forbes. Musk didn’t blast anyone for calling him out for being openly Nazi, he just complained loudly about it. Musk is being blasted by the rest of the world for being openly Nazi.

And it’s fucking hilarious to me that a double standard has appeared.

“But he has autism so it’s ok.”… Meanwhile any other random person with autism who does something wrong (even tho they may not understand or even know what they’re doing) is dragged through mud and hit with “it’s not an excuse!”

Nazi sympathizer mainstream media has to cuddle with the Nazi billionaire oligarchs so they don’t get their profit streams cut, so they’ll come up with any shitmouthed double standards they can.

I’m just glad that a lot of people i associate with can see the obvious double standard and call it out as bullshit.

Not to brag (I am), but we banned direct links awhile ago on People Twitter. We require archived links for well known people and politicians and allow screenshots. That seems to be a working solution.

I honestly think spez might let this moderator protest slide. From reddits pov, this just increases user session retention.
