Man, proper multi monitor support, smoother animations, a stable desktop experience, lower resource usage and an actually comprehensible desktop stack. Yeah, Wayland is such a mistake, we must go back to the unix way, back to X10 even. And you mentioned that people who like Wayland should go to MacOS… Yk a system, using X11.

Ik you’re just rage baiting for attention but what the hell, I’m bored.

    Wayland might be the future,
but today we’re still living in the present…

I was a fan, and tried Wayland,
but it took less then 24hrs before I switched back to X.

Just too many random bugs remain in Wayland rn…

    E.g:

    • Grayed out screen under HDR
    • LookingGlass unable to boot in fullscreen
    • Some program icons replaced with Wayland icon when running

The icons thing is because the devs didn’t name their programs correctly. In KDE I can create a window rule targeting that specific window and change the window title to be their actual program name, like com.mozilla.firefox instead of Firefox, and the problem gets fixed.

well, it displays stuff by opening windows for applications and them icons are linked to windows, the display server needs to know which icon to assign to each window, and the applications need to assign a proper name to their window process so that the display server know how to do the linking correctly. Until applications update their code so that they set their correct full title name, we will have to change it ourselves via KDE window rules or whatever.

After a quick review it seems like this is an issue with wayland on plasma specifically, because plasma tries to access the icon name from a different place and applications haven’t adapted yet.

The quick user fix I mentioned: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sungl8gWU_8&t=129s

If you have been downvoted and banned before it’s not because of Wayland. It’s cus you are kind of an arsehole.

You making a meme and then acting exactly like what you are making fun of is kinda hilarious though.

I can’t remember which, but some applications just show as the xorg icon when running under xorg.

yeah, the icon problem is stupid. there will always be apps that don’t set the icon properly in both. especially new ones where the devs didn’t get to that for every environment, yet.

a bigger problem is java though. it’s still not wayland ready and is distorted in the compatibily layer xwayland. some old, closed source java apps that use “native” stuff (like games) will probably never run well on wayland.

Honestly don’t care, once it works, I’ll happily switch. But for now, literally the only reason I know X and Wayland even exist is because I had Wayland pre-installed and switching to X fixed soo many random issue.

How exactly is this a meme? This is just bitching about stuff. And no Wayland isn’t a mistake. Maybe it is to you luddites who can’t move on from your Unix religion, but for the majority, Wayland brings tons of new features and improvements over X11. I mean X11 still has it’s uses, but it doesn’t mean Wayland just shouldn’t exist. Still if you wanna bitch about it go on. You are free to do so like distros are free to move away from X11. But at least don’t do it in a meme community.

Stay on windows or mac is you don’t care about the philosophy behind free software. What you’re doing is defending corporate funded software which are designed with malicious intent.

How is “Unix philosophy” even remotely connected to the philosophy behind free software? Unix itself was proprietary. These are completely separate things.

        “Stay on windows or mac”

And what if I don’t? I have the freedom to use Linux however I want, and with whatever display server I want, granted to me by GPLv2.

“What you’re doing is defending corporate funded software”

Do you even realize just how much funding and support Linux kernel itself receives from various multi-billion corporations? If that’s a bad thing in your book, I suggest you look into BSD, but even that gets a bit of funding from them.

        “designed with malicious intent”

You have yet to provide an proof for that. What’s their malicious intent exactly? Just creating an FLOSS modern alternative that people are free to use or avoid?

How is “Unix philosophy” even remotely connected to the philosophy behind free software?

“UNIX philosophy” refers to modular design made up of small components that interconnect well and each focus on its own goal. It’s not about the freedom.

          Unix itself was proprietary.

Bell Labs UNIX was proprietary but open source, Berkeley UNIX was FOSS. Both were developed in academic environments that valued the spirit of software freedom and often followed it by breaking the letter of the licensing imposed by their corporate sponsors.

Just wanted to correct the confusion. On a side note I don’t think Wayland goes against UNIX philosophy. It’s just that some of the components are still missing or badly divided. It will get better eventually.

The long term goal of all these “modern” alternatives is to fragment and destroy desktop linux. It is already happening, see wayland, gnome, gtk 4, systemd, immutable distros and so on.

            …bruh

That honestly sounds like a conspiracy theory. You think that a bunch of people and corporations are putting time, money and energy into these projects to break the very thing they are designed for? I really think you should do some research on exactly how the Wayland project got its start and who was involved. Spoiler, it was a bunch of Xorg developers as I understand it.

Plus the fact that desktop Linux was already fragmented by its nature. You think they want to fragment the already fragmented thing under the pretext of improvement? Fragment it by what? Providing a newer standard that is better enough than the old, that it actually convinces most groups to adopt it.

Its legit the opposite, but the beauty of right now is that the various fragmented Linux ecosystems (distros, desktop environments, etc) are more alive and more healthy now than ever before.

            Edit: grammar and clarity

being a free software advocate and worried about ‘fracturing’ seems at odds, bud. fracturing is an inherent perk of the system, imho.

Other than gnome I don’t see fragmentation in your argument. Most of the distros have shifted to systemd, most of them are shifting to Wayland. Immutable is a way of installation.

On these basic stuff it seems they are getting less fragmented instead of more.

Linux people have always been divided emacs vs vi; gnome vs kde. Nothings gonna stop that, chill man is fun.

“OpenBSD made a secure fork of X?” Depends on what you consider secure I guess. X has some fundamental design issues.

One particularly memorable one is that lock screens in X are run on top of your userspace. If they crash, you get to use your computer again. No matter how many patches are applied to X lock screens, a new bug appears every few years that has to be patched. It fails insecurely, and as such will always be insecure as long as the lock screen could feasibly crash.

If your answer is “lock screens don’t matter,” security is not a top priority for you, and that’s okay. There are other reasons you may wish to use X. Please understand however that some people may find it important, and may choose to use Wayland as a result.
