/me listening to the sound of a WinXP virtual machine booting under Debian Linux
They can shoot their foot with a grenade launcher next. I’m already out of range.
Ive had microsloth blocked for 3 years so they can jam all the jumpers they want
I got a message on my computer, Win10, saying my computer wasn’t capable of being upgraded to Win11, but it would be protected by updates until October? 2025. Nice of them to give me a reminder to switch to Linux.
I have a low spec desktop for work, I just load Tiny11 on it.
There is nothing in 11 that I want that isn’t already in 10, and what I need from Windows vs. Linux is approaching zero.
Distributions of Windows are an inherently terrible idea. Maybe look at amelioration scripts instead.
I haven’t heard this before. Why do you say that?
You’re putting a lot of faith in whoever packages the ‘distro’.
Obviously you have the same problem with trusting FOSS software distributions, but it’s mitigated by things like Linus’ Law and reproducible builds.
That being said, I personally use tiny11 VMs for certain non-critical things at home and work. I’d never use it for anything security related, or as my main OS, as there is a non-negligible chance that it’s compromised (and there’s basically no way of knowing).
Can you still skip connecting to internet?
Don’t connect to internet, Shift f10 to bring up command prompt, oobe/bypassnro, wait for restart, click I don’t have internet, make local account. Did it today.
Damn windows seems really complicated.
The fact this is even necessary makes me want to shit a brick.
“Do you want to make an online account?” No. “Okay, please set up your local account.”
That should be it. And honestly, even that’s egregious to me. Signing into online bullshit should be opt-in, not opt-out. Thank goodness I don’t use Windows anymore, finally wiped the last Windows machine in my house this past week.
They have to go through all these gymnastics because otherwise, there is no compelling reason for any given user to create a Microsoft account just to use their damn computer. So they resort to trickery, nagging, and now tacitly trying to force the issue. Most users don’t know any better so they’ll just click “ok” on whatever pops up in their faces when they first power on their new PC and take the first thing that’s offered, which in this case is to sign up for a Microsoft account and tie your entire identity to it. Non-nerds don’t know the difference between that and a local account, and that’s dangerous.
It’s become normalized that in order to use any given device or software you’re expected to set up Yet Another Online Account, and that normalization is dangerous, too. I actively try to avoid such things but it’s becoming harder and harder as time goes on.
Microsoft’s insidious insistence on online accounts is the main reason I stopped using Windows. Even with a local Windows account, one time I accidentally opened Edge, and it started automatically importing browser info from Firefox and then syncing it to the Microsoft account that I was using for MS Office. From my point of view, that was some extreme bullshit. Too much to tolerate. I didn’t want Edge to import anything from anywhere - no matter how ‘convenient and easy’ it is. and I certainly didn’t want it to upload anything - no matter what assurances of ‘privacy and security’ are claimed. And until that point, I thought accounts for individual apps could be keep isolated to just that app.
You can also just select the “for work or school” option, then it lets you make a local account because it assumes you will domain join it later, which you dont need to do.
Last time I tried this it immediately demanded I enter my domain credentials (which I don’t have, because I don’t run an Active Directory domain at home) and wouldn’t proceed without any. So I had to fall back on the disconnect-from-the-internet song and dance.

TBH I’m not going to install Windows 11, but back in Windows 10 you didn’t even have to open the command prompt.
They work fast dont they? How long has this loophole existed in windows 10?
Glad I use Arch.
Many years of windows. No longer my problems.
I use Arch too btw
Time for Linux. I don’t like to change, I’ve used windows from 3.1. But I see no other option. They will pull the plug on 10 while at the same time are trying their best to make their shitty 11 even worse.
stuck on decrappified windows for the immediate future.
Congrats in building stalking software right into the OS.
A bunch of abusive relationships about to get a whole lot worse when the other party can track literally everything they do.

For anyone who has to install Windows 11; download the full ISO then use Rufus. You’ll be able to disable some of the enshittification.
Ventoy > Rufus and also bypasses them by default.
…For now.
Exactly. At any point and update can brick the install. If I wanted an OS that can brick itself just by updating, I would use arch.

Well there’s some dude out there that recompiled windows 11 with some shitty laptop, cigarettes in his hand, & some beer into useful windows & lighter
The enshitification intensifies; the rate appears to have become exponential. This one is a deal breaker for me. I want to buy or use an OS that is my OS. I do not want any login beyond what I deem necessary for security purposes. Everything you and the software that runs on your computer does is loggable at the OS level. I don’t want an email address bound to all that. Fuck Microsoft.
They are really trying to push people to Linux aren’t they?
At this rate the user base will go from 4% to 5%!
After 5% can I ring my “Year of the Linux desktop” bell?
I can’t reveal too much but MS’s long game is to have everyone sign up for a Live account. They want to do what Apple did with Apple ID and iCloud, making every customer sign up for one. Expect more of this.
I’ve had a mac for years and still haven’t had any need for an iCloud account. It’s optional
And this sort of thing is the prelude to them finally pulling off their “OS as a service” scheme and I guarantee you in a couple of years they will try to float a monthly subscription just to use Windows, tied to your M$ account.
Pretty much. The thing is it’s done sooooo poorly. Like beyond hot trash. They are also bringing it to all their games, PC, mobile, what have you. It’ll get much worse just wait.
The announcement of the AI recall thing was enough to stop me from ever buying another Windows device. Best wishes for your job, though!
I left last year lol. I read the writing on the wall 😁
You can make local accounts on MacOS still.
Damn you Microshaft!!!
for my main computer, sure, fine, whatever. I’ll sign into my Microsoft account, I don’t mind. but my Plex/Minecraft server… maaaaaaannnn come the fuck on. I guess my server can just stay windows 10 for the next 20 years 🤷🏻♂️
Why in God’s name are you running either of those things on windows?
I thought we weren’t supposed to kink shame. Maybe /u/Raglesnarf is really into degradation and being dominated. Full on ball-busting, perhaps?
Counter-point; if someone is into degradation specifically, wouldn’t they be happy to be kink shamed?
because it was super duper easy to setup and the overhead isn’t all that bad for my use case. I am concerned whenever I decide to move/upgrade to something different since my hard drives are in a Windows “Storage pool” or whatever it’s called
In all seriousness, if you’re self hosting anything, please learn your way around Docker and Linux. It’s a small time investment up front for huge payoffs. You’ll get more value out of your hardware, and you’ll have a system that’s much more reliable (Windows was not built for 24/7 uptime).
In fairness, I’ve had several machines running versions of windows server with lots of uptime and zero stability issues. But the last time I ran a windows server is was advanced server 2003 so…
Windows Server isn’t so bad as a server platform, although it comes with a lot of unnecessary overhead, and its container support sucks. Given that containers are really the way to go with self-hosted services now, that makes Windows Server a poor choice.
But realistically, when most people say they’re self hosting on Windows, they mean regular old consumer Windows, which absolutely hates running for extended periods without rebooting. It’s just not built for uptime.
If all you’re doing is plex and a minecraft server, look into proxmox or unraid.
Unraid is paid but very noob friendly compared to most others. It’s also very flexible hardware wise.
I’ve heard great things about Free NAS. would unraid be similar to that?
