Automattic has added Beeper to their project roster that includes Wordpress, WooCommerce, Penpot and more.
As an open source project based on Matrix, with packages available for Linux… I think this ensures the future for a viable messaging app on our platform of choice.
This will further augment the use of Matrix, which may not be the best protocol for the job as others have commented in the past, but it’s better than proprietary alternatives, and a great starting point.
Although i like wordpress i dont trust Automatic. Its a gut feeling and I dont know why
There was a bit of drama on tumblr (owned by Automattic) not too long ago where a relatively well known trans blogger got banned as a part of an alleged harassment campaign. I recall Matt Mullenwag (Automattic’s CEO) being accused of following the user on to other platforms and harassing them. There were also accusations of, IIRC, tumblr staff taking payments to ban users. Which isn’t great. So if my memory is accurate, your gut feeling is probably right.
Edit: typo, slleged -> alleged
Afaik they’ve been pretty good stewards of Wordpress and other software they acquired.
I’m not so sure about that… See 👉

Edit : it’s becoming the new dystopian trend now
This is for their hosted solution though. Wordpress.org is not the same as Wordpress.com

I dont know for sure but my guess is that the self hosted wordpress sites are the majority of wordpress sites. Self hosted are also the sites hosted on webservers and VPN etc. Anything not hosted by wordpress really.
All the cloud WordPress instances that are not hosted on WordPress.com, so aws, gcloud, azure, digitalocean and lot’s others I either forgot or mistyped, use the self hosted version that offers you the preloaded WordPress package in their servers. Aws lightsail comes to mind as a very popular and cheap all in one package where you can boot up wordpress.
Is Beeper secure? I like the idea of having all of my messaging in one app, but I’m not sure about giving it my login details for Signal, Google, etc.
It is not open source, so effectively no. It uses bridges which are open source and you can host them yourself and completely sidestep Beepers closed-source client.
I’ve tried out the closed source version, and I don’t mind that part so much as all my messages apparently being unencrypted on their server
Those bridges, do they actually block META from tracking what I do? I dont really mind them eves dropping but the constant tracking all the time was the reason why I dont have facebook
Self hosting their bridges is really simple, if you have a device to run the Docker containers on. That way you don’t have to give them your logins, all they get to see are encrypted Matrix messages.
They are working on on-device bridging but currently all bridging is happening on their servers with reencrypting all messages. So you have to trust them handing all your messages.
Even services using same protocol for encrypting like Signal protocol or MLS can have incompatible implementations, so just passing messages with reencrypting or on-device bridge is not possible currently.
Don’t believe this marketing bullshit until you see the source code.
No, its not secure. The encryption and decryption happens in a closed source app that cannot be audited.
Not foss
What is not FOSS ?
Beeper
the client only, you can selfhost the bridges and use an opensource matrix client with them
The client is where the client side encryption happens. Its literally the only part that MUST be Foss.
On what basis?
That link has an editorialized title linking to an article that says nothing about source code licenses. Maybe you mean Texts is closed source and that by merging, Beeper too will be closed down?
Check their github. The app source code is not available. Its literally a closed source project.
didn’t they have an IRC bridge (Heisenbridge) to libera.chat? That’s the main reason why I put myself on the wait list and now when I open the app IRC is not supported…?
They had some issues with the team on libera.chat last I read. I don’t really know what happened but yeah it sucks.
Additional context: https://libera.chat/guides/matrix#wheres-the-official-matrix-bridge
I’m not 100% sure how this relates to Beeper, but from what I gather it’s based on Matrix so I guess it’s the same deal.
that’s about the official IRC bridge, but Heisenbridge is a third party that is still allowed. The only downside is you need to self-host Matrix and Heisenbridge, which is a no-go for me. I think I saw beeper promoting that they bridge to IRC but apparently they no longer do
You only need to selfhost the bridge, it can use their Matrix server. Makes it much simpler.
any bridge that uses Appservice requires a self-hosted Matrix server
Nope, not if you use the Beeper Bridge Manager. I’m running two bridges right now, without having my own Matrix server.
Also, waitlist is gone. Sign ups are now open: https://www.beeper.com/
Use at your own risk. Its a closed source app and can’t be trusted
