“If you just suffer through the first 9 episodes it gets REALLY GOOD!”
Yeah or I could not.
This is why I have my three to six episode rule. If a TV show cannot capture my interest in three to six episodes depending on its run time, whether it’s an hour or 30 minutes. Then it’s not worth my time. If a TV show cannot prove to me why it’s interesting or worth watching in the same amount of time that a movie takes to tell a complete story, then what’s the point of even watching it?
There is basically no series that increases in quality over the seasons. Some wave a bit but if you don’t like it in the first few episodes you won’t like it later.
Almost every series decreases in quality after each episode. Game of Thrones. Great series in the beginning a bit slow in the middle and badly rushed in the end. The end is ok quality.
Lost great concept medium quality. Should have ended after season 3.
Steins;Gate amazing first season. Very sad second season. Third season only for real fans.
Gintama… Well gintama is gintama and there is no rating hate it or love it, no in between.
Many Star Trek series take some time to find their tone and pacing. Granted, some never manage to do so…
I forced myself to watch through the first season of Breaking Bad, the second was meh, but starting from the third and until the end it became the best series I ever watched. The same happend to a friend, he wanted to stop watching, I told him to go on and at the end he loved it.
Better Call Saul also got better as episodes went on.
The Foundation series had terrible pacing in the first season, and they massively improved on that in the second.
Idk, I think it depends on the type of show maybe? Or the presumed prestige of it. I feel like a lot of procedurals I’ve watched get better once they get their legs under them. They not bad in the beginning but once the characters have been established and the writers get the hang of doing crime/mysteries they get more fluid.
Yeah I’ve had people that try to get me into anime and they’ll say some shit like “it’s really boring but after season 7 ITS AMAZING, oh and also season 192 is the best”
My friends do this to me, and I actually do give it a shot. I’m always excited to see what they like, because I love them and want them to feel like I’m interested in their stuff. I don’t always like it, but I do try.
I recommend something to my friends and they never even attempt to watch it or listen, or read or whatever.
If someone you care about asks you to take a look at something, you could at least try. If you don’t, you’re just an asshole. Like my friends. Now I don’t even bother looking into anything they recommend. Still love ‘em though. 🤷
Quite some years ago I offhandedly recommended a band to a friend, and like a week later she texted me thanking me for the recommendation, and gave me her thoughts. I thought that was really cool of her, because it’s all too common that recommendations are ignored. I decided then that I would do my best to actually follow up on recommendations from friends and then try to let them know what I thought. It’s a practice that’s generally very well received.
I also then decided to be more honest about whether or not I actually will check something out. For example, I don’t really listen to podcasts so I’m pretty upfront with people that it’s not likely I’ll listen to whatever they recommend. I think it’s had a ripple effect of generally being more honest in my relationships, which has been transformative. I highly recommend it.
I’m as honest as it gets, unfortunately, and they aren’t. So, when I say I’ll check it out, I do, but when they say they’ll check it out, they never even tried at all.
Yeah I just don’t take it personally. I get what it’s like, people have their tastes and aren’t necessarily quick to try something on a recommendation. Honestly I don’t think it’s something you can really expect of people, and certainly it shouldn’t be so transactional.
Oh, no. I hope I didn’t come off like it’s transactional.
See, to me, when I love and respect you, I want to see what gives you joy, what makes you tick and how you think. It makes me happy to see my friends happy when I take part or observe their hobbies and interests. It’s cute. I guess I’m more bummed that I don’t have that kind of friend myself, if that makes more sense?
Ah yes, okay I see what you’re saying. I think I’m very fortunate to have a couple of friends who care about media the way that I do, and we know each other’s tastes and take recommendations seriously. I have a lot of other friends that are absolutely not like that, so I guess it’s an individual sorta thing ya know.
I’m a loner, so the ones I do have are the only ones I could keep. I don’t always have the energy for talking and hanging out long. It’s an issue I am, unfortunately, very aware of. :/
But, hey. Thank you for the actual conversation.
I’m one of those people who don’t watch almost any movies or TV series. Oppenheimer was the only movie in a long while that I was slightly interested of. Watched it yesterday only to be reminded why I don’t watch movies.
So, you’re using some form of social media, therefore you know that Oppenheimer was generally well received. What was your expectation from posting this with no further explanation of what you did or didn’t like, as if it was self-evident?
Since I’m forced to infer what exactly you didn’t like about Oppenheimer, and all movies in general, I’m going to assume you have an attention span of less then 40 minutes. As being longer than that is basically the only thing that every movie has in common.
Now what does my attention span have anything do with this? I just sat thru a 3 hour movie… The movies I do like are often around the same lenght. Inception, Django, Fury and Martian to name a few.
This isn’t a movie review. I just said I didn’t like it exactly like I didn’t like most of the previous movies or tv shows I’ve given a chance to either. If you do then good for you.
Acshewally, Oppenheimer is the single greatest work of art known to man. Since you’ve failed to provide even the faintest sliver of evidence as to how you could possibly find such a masterpiece “unenjoyable”, Occam’s Razor leaves us with no option but to assume you are simply so monumentally stupid you couldn’t begin to comprehend even 4th grade level long division, much less the subtle nuances of the mathematics necessary to the creation of the atomic bomb. What other outcome could you possibly have expected posting such baseless, inflammatory drivel? I hope you stub your toe on your couch every morning for the rest of your life, you doddering ignoramus.
I hope the streamin bubble will pop soon and we will have fewer but higher quality shows.
Or things that are already made disappear and are replaced with reality TV, like what’s happening with HBO/Discovery/Max/whatever.
The bubble has produced some of the highest quality TV ever. If the bubble bursts, the quality will go down for sure.
