Interesting!
Sadly the only reason I’m on Instagram at all are family and friends… wish I could move them as well.
Why not do both? And then be sure to casually ask “so what’s your Instagram and Pixelfed?” (Not on either, but I’ve been told this works).
EDIT: I understand and sympathize with those who are trapped by Big Tech social media. It may not be realistic for you to leave Instagram, but you could do Pixelfed along with Instagram (and be sure to advertise your Pixelfed handle there, provided they don’t take down your account for doing so). Hopefully this will help to bring your family and friends over.
Yeah, that could work. The “problem” though is that I mainly post on Instagram to keep in touch with friends and family.
Not sure what I’d post on a network where no one I know is subscribing. It’s not like I’m a good photographer or anything.
That’s the whole problem with any social app right. Would be so happy to ditch Whatsapp for better alternatives but what’s the point if no one I know is there.
Glad you guys are here though :p
Yeah. It’s easier to switch out reddit since that’s never really eas about the social aspect. I was only there for the customized feed of interesting topics.
Seems I’m getting both that and a lot more social aspects over here. Feels like I’ve soon posted more here then I ever did on reddit.
And the Pixelfed dev is also working on a kbin app!
Might want to start using this ASAP before F*ckbook/Instagram/Meta figures out how to block this
It uses the zip archive feature that they allow you to request and export so at least it doesn’t use a direct connection or API. I think there is also some EU rule or something about requiring it because Dansup was asking about filing a complaint because of the export format being convoluted or something, not sure of the details but hopefully that means there’s some legal weight to the export feature sticking around.
Yes the EU has the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which among other things gives users the right to request their data back from platforms.
It’s regulation with teeth since many of the tech multinationals have already had multi billion dollar fines. The fines can be up to 4% of global revenue.
So… is Pixelfed really like Instagram? It seems to be really photo focused. As in: Actual photography. While Instagram is much more personal often, with selfies and so on. And from everything I’ve personally seen, it seems that selfies on the fediverse are like a huge no-no. No one is stigmatized for doing it, but no one is doing it. I don’t know if what I’m saying is clear.
it’s just got a photography-centric userbase i guess. how it’s used is down to how people choose to use it :p
it’s a platform for personal posting if you want it to be
