I have made a step-by-step guide so you dumb fucks can follow.

click on your username in the top right corner

Go to “Settings” and then switch to the “Blocks” tab

Type in the name of the community you want to block

Save your changes. That’s it! See it wasn’t so hard.

Putting the tone aside, I usually browse the All tab for that reason, and also because subscribing in Lemmy is weirder than it was on Kbin (even if it doesn’t crash the page like Kbin did). Nothing personal against the communities, and sure, it’s an exercise on patience, but after some time, the results become noticeable as my feed gets fine-tuned into what I want to see.

Do you mean downvoting or blocking the communities? There is no feed fine-tuning based on downvotes on Lemmy, so if you don’t see those communities in All after a while it means the community members just stopped posting altogether, not that the community got hidden from you.

It’s even easier to simply visit the community, if you aren’t subscribed you get a big nice block button in the sidebar.

On December 1, the situation, somehow, worsened when Kanye appeared on The Alex Jones Show. Over the course of the broadcast, he repeatedly praised Hitler and the Nazi party, insisting that he “loves” Nazis and “likes” Hitler, and at one point blatantly declaring, “The Jewish media has made us feel like the Nazis and Hitler have never offered anything of value to the world.” His remarks placed Jones in the rare position of attempting to help Kanye walk back his extremism by reminding him that Nazis “did a lot of very bad things.”

“But they did good things, too,” Ye responded. “We’ve got to stop dissing the Nazis all of the time.”

That was in the morning. By evening, Ye had been indefinitely suspended from Twitter for posting an image of a Nazi swastika inside of a Star of David.

I have downvoting disabled anyway but it sucks that others are influenced by it.

I think there are a lot of people on Lemmy trying to turn public spaces into their private space, or shape communities into what they want instead of fostering a new one from the ground up.

It’s dead simple to start an instance or even a community on an instance that aligns with how people feel. Somehow instead we’ve defaulted to projecting negativity, which inhibits growth. Lemmy can be better.

I had to literally defederate lemmy.world and turn off downvotes on my instance to stop this bullshit. Then these fucking morons are like boo hoo why isn’t there any niche content on lemmy

Because you fucking idiots downvote anything niche and make it miserable to post. Enjoy reading about linux and Kamala Harris forever, reddit morons.

Forgive me if I’m a bit of a thicky, but why is there a need to block communities? Doesn’t simply ignoring them work?

Time and screen space are limited. When I take a poo break, I don’t want to have to wade through a bunch of posts in a language I don’t speak or about sports I care nothing about. But at the same time I am open to new communities that I might not have imagined even existed. So I just leave it on all and block the communities/instances I’m not interested in. It was a lot of work at first, but it’s pretty nice now.

Agree. If you’re not interested in something, just block the community and don’t spam downvotes. It’s like intentionally showing up somewhere you don’t want to be just to “boooo” everything.

    Steps in Tesseract:

    1. Click the community name in the post

    1. Click “Block Community” in the Community profile modal

And if you’re in the feed, any other posts to that community will magically disappear

Downvotes don’t matter. They mean nothing. A downvote only hurts your pride. Ignore them and move on. Asking about them and trying to figure out why people downvote is a path to madness.

      Kanye fan switches to lemmy

      sees posts downvoted to oblivion

realizes he is not welcome, goes back to reddit.

Besides it affects sorting quality posts within the community. Not a problem currently since there’s not much activity on there now but still.

If it’s a kanye fan who cares? They can get bent. For everyone else it doesn’t matter. Downvotes are at most a few votes out of 50-100 or more. It’s like getting mad at a party because 99 people loved the party but one guy hated the color of the cake and wrote you a letter about it.

You are the type of people for who I made this post. Just block it and move on. It is perfectly understandable that you do not like the things kanye has said, I don’t either. But I still like his music. I know it sounds cliche or cringe, but Kanye’s music was the only thing that I enjoyed during my worst times.

Do that for enough groups, suddenly you have a much smaller community, and suddenly you’re basically just a new hexbear. You need a critical mass of diverse interests.

There is a reason this type of platform has a voting system.

How motivating do you think it is to post to smaller communities just to get an unrepresentative number of downvoters right off the bat? I can’t speak for OP but I’m sure there are plenty that don’t post or reply at all because of it.

I think at its core downvoting can be fine but on smaller platforms it’s easily abused as a form of content suppression, bullying, etc. Lemmy seems to be particularly prone to account hopping downvote spam, which sucks but it is what it is.

Thankfully Lemmy is flexible enough to create what you want more privately if one is so inclined. I’m smoking weed about it.

It’s hard to build a community when you get random downvote out of nowhere without explanation. You might have easy time to ignore it, but not everyone does.

this is what i was meaning to say. it does not look nice on the community page when every post is downvoted to oblivion. something the “downvotes don’t matter on lemmy” crowd just doesn’t understand.
