A Delta Air Lines flight that departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City was forced to make an emergency return to the airport Friday morning after an emergency slide came apart from the Boeing 767, the airline said. A search for the slide was ongoing.
“After the aircraft had safely landed and proceeded to a gate, it was observed that the emergency slide had separated from the aircraft,” a Delta spokesperson said in a statement to NPR Friday afternoon.
Genuine question: Are these sorts of issues actually happening more frequently now, or are they just getting reported on more broadly due to the bigger issues with Boeing planes earlier this year? I feel like every week there’s a new article about stuff falling off of Boeing planes, whereas until recently it seemed like we’d go months without this sort of news.
You know it’s the second. This is the current hot topic, so every little thing is reported as some sort of breaking news story for clicks.
Now that you’ve noticed it this time, look out for it everywhere else. It happens ALL the time with EVERY topic that they could conceivably get more clicks from.
If you ever think, “Huh, there’s been a lot of news about X recently”… that’s probably not because X is happening more often, it’s just being reported on more.
Yeah, I think you’re right. Boeing planes falling apart is to news as AI is to marketing for anything remotely tech-adjacent right now.

Yeah, I’d love to see some year over year data of emergency landings / returns, the mechanical issues, and the brand.
I’m curious about how much of this attention is deserved and how much is just confirmation bias.
Personally I think it’s a bit of both. There’s definitely issues with Boeing build quality and maintenance right now. But also, of course any incident involving Boeing is more newsworthy for that reason.

It does happen all the time. It is a problem that it happens all the time. These planes aren’t made with proper quality control checks in place and are far less safe than the airlines have been claiming for years.
The extra scrutiny from the news is a good thing.
